Clarkson Winner Tops UNLV, 1-0

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer took home a 1-0 win in their season opener over UNLV in Anteater Stadium thanks to a game-winner from Noah Clarkson.

  • The 'Eaters and Rebels played to a scoreless first half with UCI putting up six of the eight shots and earning five aof the six corners
  • A sequence late in the first half nearly broke the deadlock. Mario Anaya whipped a corner in that Jake Means would float back near the goalline. Josh Kenworthy got a head on it that deflected off the post and back into the mixer where a flurry of kicks eventually saw UNLV clear it
  • The match's only goal came in the 66th minute as Noah Clarkson punched home a pass from Francesco Montanile by a diving UNLV keeper to make it 1-0
  • Luke Pruter and the defense stood tall allowing four shots and one on target to complete the clean sheet
  • Clarkson made his collegiate debut in the match subbing on at halftime and collected his first career goal, point, and game-winner in his 21st minute
  • Montanile added an assist for the seventh of his career
  • Luke Pruter notched his fifth career shutout with his 93rd career save hauled in
  • Clarkson was among a few Anteaters making their collegiate debuts including freshman starter Brady Treinen, second-year Justin Conyers, and grad transfer making his Anteater debut Christian Gomez
 
 
 


 

UCI wins its first season opener under head coach Yossi Raz in his sixth season to start 1-0-0 on the year. Next up will be a test Sunday, August 27 with a 3:00 p.m. kickoff against 2022 College Cup participant and No. 8 Creighton.
