2022-23 Year In Review: Winter

| By:
The winning continued in the Winter with men's and women's basketball each capturing a regular season title, the first time both programs stood atop the standings at the same time. Winter also saw women's indoor track racking up several new school records.

Women's Basketball
UC Irvine women's basketball made history in 2022-23. The Anteaters won their first Big West regular-season title, earned the program's first postseason victory and set school records in both overall (25) and conference (16) wins. They also finished the year ranked seventh in the nation in scoring defense with a program-best 53.2 points allowed per game.

The historic season didn't come easy. The 'Eaters, who were picked to finish sixth in the Big West Preseason Poll, lost three starters to season-ending injuries in the first seven weeks of conference play. It took both a physical and emotional toll on the team, but despite going down to a seven-person rotation over the final month, the Anteaters continued to play for each other. They closed out the regular season with seven-straight wins to clinch the Big West title before making their second-straight WNIT appearance where they beat San Diego State, 55-45, in the opening round.

Sophomore Hunter Hernandez was named to the All-Big West First Team, while junior Nevaeh Parkinson, sophomore Déja Lee and sophomore Nikki Tom garnered honorable mention recognition. Parkinson was also tabbed the Big West's Best Sixth Player. Junior Diaba Konate rounded out the postseason awards with a Big West All-Defensive Team nod.

Several milestones were reached during the season. Head Coach Tamara Inoue earned her 100th career victory, Konate surpassed 1,000 points in her collegiate career and Naomi Hunt eclipsed 200 career 3-pointers made. UCI also put together a school-record tying nine-game win streak from Dec. 17-Jan. 19.

Men's Basketball
Men's basketball captured its eighth Big West regular season title in the last 10 years and the sixth under head coach Russell Turner with a 15-5 league record, sharing the top spot with UC Santa Barbara.

The Anteaters ended the season 23-12 overall, the program's eighth 20-win season under Turner. The season was highlighted by a victory over No. 21 Oregon, 69-56, on the road. Following the win, UC Irvine received votes in Associated Press Top 25 poll as well as being named the National Team of the Week by reporter Andy Katz and NCAA March Madness. It had been 40 years since the Kevin Magee-led Anteaters beat Oregon, 46-44, in overtime on Nov. 29, 1982.

A few weeks later, UC Irvine took NCAA finalist San Diego State down to the final 2.4 seconds on the road where the Aztecs hit a clutch three-point basket and a free throw to claim the 72-69 victory, proving once again the Anteaters could compete with the nation's best. UCI would end the season, participating in the NIT, the program's 14th post season appearance.

Guards DJ Davis, Dawson Baker, and Pierre Crockrell II were awarded Big West accolades. Davis was named to the All-Big West first team, Baker earned All-Big West second team and All-Tournament Team recognition, and Crockrell II landed a spot on the honorable mention squad.

Crockrell II tallied 178 assists which stands at fourth all-time in a single season in program history. The senior finished the season ranked 22nd in total assists, 36th in assist-turnover ratio (2.47), and 40th in assists per game (5.1) in the nation. Baker became the 32nd Anteater to reach the 1,000-point career milestone (1,017), while Davis knocked down 149 three-pointers which is 11th all-time at UCI.

UCI was crowned the champions of the Las Vegas Holiday Classic Invite after defeating both Nicholls State and New Mexico State by double-digits. Crockrell II was named to the All-Tournament team and Davis was named the MVP.

The Anteaters broke a 28-year-old school record in free throw attempts in the 79-75 victory over CSU Bakersfield, shooting 51 from the line.

Center Bent Leuchten earned Big West Player of the Week on Jan. 9 after recording an impressive 17-21 (.810) shooting from the field, 4-5 (.800) from three-point range, and 8-9 (.889) from the free throw line to average 23 points over two games.

She made her way onto the podium with a third-place finish in the shot put at the MPSF Championships, while she won both events at the season-opening Spokane Indoor Challenge.
