SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball erased a slow start to score the final 10 runs of a 10-2 win Tuesday night at Fowler Park against San Diego.
The win pushes the 'Eaters to 9-1 in midweek matchups this season and gives them eight wins in their last nine to improve to 31-14 overall.
"We feel good, we're starting to figure out our starting pitching, and we feel a lot more confident with our overall staff, top to bottom, and we know the offense is going to give us a shot."
Strong words from
Nick Rincover as he and the pitching staff performed as a unit allowing just two runs, both unearned, in the win.
Andre Antone collected the win to go to 4-1 after one of the unearned runs in three innings of work. Behind him were an impressive
Cooper Robinson retiring all four of his hitters,
Nick Rincover shutting down a San Diego (22-23-1, 15-9) threat in his longest outing as an Anteater, and
Cameron Wheeler and
Max Martin delivering scoreless eighth and ninth innings to seal the win.
"When you don't have your best stuff, it's really important that you trust it," said
Nick Rincover of his outing tonight using his defense to get him through his longest outing as an Anteater. "I just focused on getting good height, and then whatever happens happens and it paid off."
The offense started slow but came on late to bust out for 16 hits. After going down 2-0 early, UCI got a run back in the third, but still trailing by a score of 2-1 and had left nine runners on in the first four innings. They broke through in the fifth inning as
Auggie Gutierrez's sac fly tied things, 2-2, and then a pair of clutch, two-out hits led to an RBI single by
Jo Oyama to make it 3-2 'Eaters.
Another run in the sixth pushed it to 4-2, but USD was still within striking distance and UCI needed shutdown pitching from Rincover and key defensive plays to hold onto the lead.
The eighth inning delivered the separation the team needed as UCI exploded for six runs capped by
Anthony Martinez's two-out, three-run home run to the 10-2 lead.
Martinez finished with his sixth four-hit game of the seaosn and the three RBIs. Elsewhere,
Chase Call had three hits with an RBI and Gutierrez had a pair of hits with two driven in. Anteater hitters drew 11 walks and were hit four times including
Luke Spillane reaching five times on the night with two walks and two runs, Oyama walking three times, and Bermudez plunked twice to up his Big West lead.
"The offense is incredible, and same with the defense and to have four infielders behind you that you have complete trust to make every play is everything, and anything hit on the ground you know they've got it covered."
The Toreros tossed out 12 pitchers in the nine inning game with nine issuing a walk, nine different pitchers allowing a hit, and just 1.2 innings and 28 pitches for the longest outing of the evening.
UCI keeps their run going as it heads to CSUN for a pivotal series this weekend starting Friday, May 12, with first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
