FULLERTON, Calif. - Sophomore
Jolie Robinson is the 2023 Big West Heptathlon champion.
Â
With two of her strongest events taking place on Day 2, Robinson compiled 2,262 points in the long jump, javelin and 800m to go from third to first in the standings Saturday at Titan Track Complex.
Â
Robinson finished the two-day, seven-event competition with a personal-record 5,343 points, coming in 88 points ahead of defending Big West champion Jessica Swalve of UC Santa Barbara. Robinson's score ranks fifth in program history, while she is also UCI's first conference champion in the heptathlon since Lauren Collins in 2007.
Â
"It's really about balance and finding consistency in the heptathlon," said head coach
Jeff Perkins. "Jolie did a good job of staying level-headed the whole time. Even though some of the events didn't go as well as planned, she found a way to really execute when it mattered and put herself in a position to win it.
Â
"This is huge going into next weekend; it's 10 points we haven't had since 2007. Now we have the ball rolling to take that momentum into next week and really get after it and try to find a championship for our women's team."
Â
Robinson got out to a strong start in the long jump with a best of 5.96 meters (19-6.75). It was the top mark of the afternoon and was a quarter of an inch off her PR which she set last weekend.
Â
The Mission Viejo native then launched a lifetime-best 42.63m (139-10) on her first attempt in the javelin. She beat out the rest of the field by three feet, while her mark ranks seventh among the Anteaters' all-time leaders.
Â
Robinson took the lead heading into the final event where she did more than enough as she clocked an 800m personal-best 2:28.89 to claim the title.
Â
Junior
Chaselyn Amos closed out the competition with a personal-record 4,375 points as she moved up three spots in the standings to 11th. On the final day of the heptathlon she posted marks of 5.39m (17-8.25) in the long jump, 29.88m (98-0) in the javelin and 2:33.38 in the 800m.
Â
Junior
Shaelyn Amos (4,209) was also 14th, while classmate
Laura Sangiacomo took 17th with a PR 3,975 points.
Â
The 'Eaters return to Fullerton next weekend for the remainder of the Big West Championship events, May 12-13.
