UC Irvine Duo Named Academic All-Distirct

IRVINE, Calif. -- Men's volleyball players Doug Dahm and Cole Gillis were selected to the 2023 Academic All-District® Men's At-Large Team by College Sports Communicators.

The award recognizes the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances in the athletic realm and in the classroom. Student-athletes needed a cumulative GPA over 3.50, have played at least one full season at the institution, and played the minimum number of games to be honored. The At-Large category includes the sports of volleyball, water polo, fencing, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, rifle, skiing, and wrestling.

Dahm will be graduating in June with a degree in mechanical engineering, maintaining over a 3.8 grade point average. The middle blocker ranked sixth among Big West players with a 0.95 block average. He had a season-high 10 kills versus then-No. 1 Hawaii and recorded a career-high 7 block assists three times in his career. The Scholar-Athlete and Big West All-Academic honoree was on the Dean's List 10 times and earned the Dean's Choice Award for his engineering design project that created a prosthetic thumb.   

Gillis capped his career being named AVCA All-American honorable mention. He held the NCAA's best mark for hitting percentage with a minimum of 20 attempts at .800 and was third in the Big West in hitting percentage (.326) overall. This season, the outside hitter ranked 11th in aces (0.27), 13th in points (3.07) and 14th in kills (2.53) in the Big West. He was honored as Big West Offensive Player of the Week on Jan. 23, 2023 and named to the 2020 Big West All-Freshman Team. Gillis has been on the Dean's List eight times and garnered Scholar-Athlete and Big West All-Academic accolades. He graduated last quarter with a degree in political science with over a 3.7 grade point average.
