'Eaters Blank Cal Poly, 7-0, on the Road

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team won its ninth-straight match with a dominant 7-0 victory over Cal Poly Saturday afternoon at the Mustang Tennis Complex.

The Anteaters (10-6, 3-0 Big West) had impressive performances across the board, dropping only one singles set on the day to remain undefeated in conference play. Cal Poly fell to 6-9 overall and 1-2 in Big West matches.
Enrique Luque Rico highlighted the action with his first ranked win of the season, taking down No. 83 Noah Berry at the top of the lineup.

The 'Eaters got out to a strong start in doubles with Brandon Park and Noah Zamora defeating Noah Berry/Fernando Fonseca, 6-4, for their team-leading ninth victory at No. 1. Matthew Sah and Rithvik Krishna then secured the early 1-0 lead with a 6-4 triumph over Ben Keyser/Joe Leather at the third position. Enrique Luque Rico and Thomas Smart were also up 4-3 at No. 2 when UCI clinched the point.

Krishna was first off the court in singles, rolling past Colter Smith 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4. Krishna has now won eight in a row and improved to 10-4 in dual-match play. Smart (11-4) followed suit, giving UC Irvine a 3-0 lead with an impressive 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6.

Over on court one, Luque Rico was pitted against his second consecutive ranked opponent. He stepped up to the challenge, delivering the match-clinching point in straight sets. Luque Rico upended No. 83 Berry 6-4, 6-1 as he moved to 9-4 on the season and 7-1 at No. 1. He snapped Berry's four-match win streak and handed him his first conference loss.

UC Irvine completed the sweep of the Mustangs with wins from Park, Amiri and Zamora. Park got the best of Leather, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 2, while Amiri beat Bastiaan Weststrate 6-2, 7-6 (3) at No. 5. Zamora also outlasted Fonseca 6-2, 6-7 (2), 11-9 in a super tiebreaker at the third position to push his win streak to eight. Amiri (7) and Park (6) extended their singles streaks as well.

UCI returns to Anteater Tennis Stadium next week, hosting UC Davis (April 14) and UC Santa Barbara (April 16) in Big West action.
