Smith Runs Top-10 Steeplechase Time in Azusa

AZUSA, Calif. - Cameron Smith led the UC Irvine men's track & field team Thursday with a big personal record in the 3000m steeplechase at the Bryan Clay Invitational.
 
Smith crossed the finish line in 8:58.24, shaving 11.37 seconds off his previous best and cracking the nine-minute mark for the first time in his career. Smith entered UCI's all-time top-10 at No. 8.
 
He placed 37th in a large field of 132 athletes, coming in just behind Cal State Fullerton's Talman Young. The two were the first Big West members to run a sub-9:00 race this season.
 
 
LONG BEACH, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's track & field team also had 10 student-athletes in action at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Thursday at LBSU's Jack Rose Track.
 
Drew Pickett paced a trio of Anteaters in the 110m hurdles where he took sixth out of 37 with a wind-aided personal-record 14.17. Jarel Sayles added a top-10 showing as he clocked a wind-aided season-best 14.48.
 
Malcolm Overbaugh had a 10th-place finish in a 200m field of 61 runners. He notched a wind-aided lifetime-best 21.44. Eric Parker also had a wind-aided collegiate best of 21.95. Ty Sheridan (22.32) and Jake Preston (22.55) rounded out a quartet of 'Eaters in the 200m.
 
Brandon Burns ran the 100m, crossing the finish line in 10.85 seconds.
 
Justin Willingham (52-10.25) and Quincy Stokes (51-00.75) also competed in the shot put.
 
On Friday, the Anteaters are set to return to Azusa for the second day of the Bryan Clay Invitational, while they also make their way back to Long Beach for the first day of the Beach Invitational.
