February 18, 2023 | Men's Tennis
STOCKTON, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team fell to Nevada, 4-3, in a neutral-site match Saturday at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
For the second time in their last three outings, the Anteaters came up short in a contest that went down to the wire.
The 'Eaters (0-4) started strong, earning the hard-fought doubles point. After falling at No. 3, UCI won a tiebreaker at the top two spots in the lineup for the early advantage.
Making their debut as a tandem, junior Brandon Park and sophomore Noah Zamora took down Matheo Coupu/Delmas N'Tcha, 7-6 (3) on court one. Senior Ali Amiri and junior Thomas Smart also upended the All-Mountain West pairing of Satchel Benn/Loris Zisswiller, 7-6 (3) at No. 2.
In singles, Park made quick work of Benn, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3 to put UC Irvine on top, 2-0. The Wolf Pack then came storming back with wins at the second, fourth and fifth positions to pull ahead, 3-2.
Smart brought the Anteaters even with an impressive victory at No. 6 as he rebounded from an opening-set loss to defeat Zisswiller, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3.
The match was then decided on court one where Zamora had forced a third set, but was unable to complete the comeback as Pedro Liborio escaped with the 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win.
UC Irvine will look to bounce back tomorrow when it takes on Pacific. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.
