IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Irvine will play seven non-conference matches at home to go along with the always grueling Big West slate in 2024.
Due to facility issues at the Bren Events Center, there will be an old school start to the season, playing non-conference matches in Crawford Hall.
"This is where it all began for UC Irvine men's volleyball," head coach
David Kniffin reflected. "Bob Newcomb came here and founded the program. That's an honoring moment to step back in that venue and remember where it all began.
We are so grateful for the gift of Court 21. That court alone transforms any arena. In Crawford, there is noise amplification based on the size of the venue, the proximity of the crowd and that electric feel is all in play plus its elevated with Court 21. The fact that we can put that down in Crawford Hall makes that experience so much more special."
The first two weeks of the season features teams from the EIVA, NEC and MIVA. The 2024 campaign kicks off at home against George Mason on Jan. 9.
"I'm excited for the George Mason match for a few reasons," Kniffin said. "It's always great to play a team from the EIVA and I respect the intensity of their team."
The next night, UCI hosts St. Francis (Jan. 10) followed by Princeton (Jan. 13) and McKendree (Jan. 17).
The Anteaters will take a trip to BYU to play a pair of matches (Jan. 26-27) then entertain UCLA on Jan. 31.
Visits to Los Angeles to play the Bruins (Feb. 2) and Trojans (Feb. 10) surround a home match versus USC on Feb. 7. UCI will head north to play Stanford twice (Feb. 16-17) before home (Feb. 23) and away (Feb. 24) contests with Irvine neighbor Concordia.
The Anteaters will start Big West action at UC San Diego on Mar. 1 then return home to face the Tritons on Mar. 3.
UCI will participate in the 28
th Outrigger Resorts Invitational Mar. 7-8, and 10. The Anteaters, who are former winners of one of the nation's premiere tournaments, will face Grand Canyon from the MPSF on Mar. 7 and Lewis of the MIVA on Mar. 8. Big West foes UC Irvine and Hawai'i will meet in a non-conference contest on Mar. 10.
The Anteaters will then end the season with the remainder of the Big West schedule featuring home contests against CSUN (Mar. 30), Hawai'i (Apr. 5-6) and Long Beach State (Apr. 12).
Five of the six Big West teams were ranked or receiving votes in the final poll of 2023, including three in the top 5.
The Big West Championship returns to Hawaii Apr. 18-20 followed by the NCAA Championship April 30, May 2 & 4 in Long Beach, Calif.
