'Eaters Tie for Sixth in Fall Finale

KAPOLEI, O'ahu - The UC Irvine men's golf team closed out its fall season with a top-10 finish at the Kapolei Invitational.
 
The Anteaters recorded the program's second-best score to par though 54 holes at 38-under. Over the course of the three-day tournament at Kapolei Golf Club, UCI combined for a 5-count-4 total of 826 (272-279-275) to tie for sixth with 41st-ranked BYU.
 
No. 46 Loyola Marymount took home the team title at 806 (-58), and was followed by No. 53 Florida Gulf Coast (813), No. 23 Baylor (817), Texas State (820) and No. 86 Augusta (825). The Lions' Trevor Algya was the individual champion at 17-under 199.
 
Senior Darien Zhao and freshman Jason Tang led the 'Eaters in a tie for 19th. Zhao had his best score of the tournament in Thursday's final round at 5-under 67. He made the turn at even par before firing five birdies on the back nine. Zhao climbed 13 spots in the standings to finish at 10-under 206 (68-71-67). Tang, who dropped out of the top-10 on the final day, still had an impressive week with rounds of 65, 68 and 73. 
 
Sophomore Yaoting Zou also tied for 25th at 8-under 208 (68-70-70), and classmate Rei Harashima tied for 62nd with a season-best 3-under 213 (72-70-71). Harashima had an eagle on the par-5, 526-yard 14th hole.
 
Sophomore Jin Nakao matched Zhao for UCI's best round of the day at 5-under 67. He jumped 24 spots into a tie for 69th with a three-round total of 214 (71-76-67).
 
UC Irvine will be back in action in February when it kicks off the spring season at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, California (Feb. 6-8).
