IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is headed to Somis, California, for the Bill Cullum Invitational, Oct. 9-10.
The two-day tournament will be held at The Saticoy Club with the par-72 course being played at 7,008 yards. Action gets underway with the first two rounds Monday starting at 8:30 a.m. The final 18 holes are then slated for 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Both days will have a shotgun start.
The Anteaters are part of a 14-team field that also features Cal State Fullerton, Cal State San Bernardino, Hawai'i, North Dakota State, Sacramento State, Southern Utah, Stanislaus State, Temple, UC Riverside, UC San Diego, Utah State, Weber State and host CSUN.
UCI's 5-count-4 lineup includes Darien Zhao, Rei Harashima, Jason Tang, Yaoting Zou and Joshua Lane.
The 'Eaters have competed in the Bill Cullum Invitational in each of the last 10 years the tournament has been held. During that stretch, they had a high finish of second in 2016. Last year, UC Irvine placed third overall, and was led by Darien Zhao, who tied for first before falling to CSUN's Felix Schrott in a one-hole playoff.
LAST TIME OUT
Senior Darien Zhao and freshman Jason Tang led UC Irvine at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational, Sept. 25-26. Zhao claimed runner-up honors with a career-best 13-under 200 (66-62-72). His second-round 62 was a school record. Tang also had an impressive collegiate debut, tying for sixth at 10-under 203 (74-65-64). Yaoting Zou tied for 59th (220), while Rei Harashima was one stroke back in a tie for 62nd. As a team, the 'Eaters combined for a 54-hole score of 844 (-8) to place seventh overall.
SENIOR LEADER
Darien Zhao, UCI's only senior, kicked off the 2023-24 season with a bang as he claimed runner-up honors with a career-best 13-under 200 at the Nick Watney Invitational. Zhao opened the tournament with back-to-back sub-70 rounds, carding a 66 (-5) prior to firing a school-record 62 (-9). He finished the first two rounds with 14 birdies and one eagle against only two bogeys for a program-best 36-hole score of 128 (-14). Zhao, a two-time All-Big West selection, has eight career top-10 finishes.

Freshman Jason Tang made a statement in his collegiate debut, tying for sixth at the season-opening Nick Watney Invitational. Tang concluded his first tournament as an Anteater at 10-under 203 (74-65-64). He found his stride with a bogey-free second round to jump 40 spots in the standings, and carried the momentum into the final round where he continued his ascent up the leaderboard with a 64 (-7).
SECOND TIME AROUND
UC Irvine has three sophomores who gained invaluable experience in 2022-23. All three played in every tournament last year with Rei Harashima leading the trio as an All-Big West honorable mention selection. Harashima notched five top-20 finishes and a 72.42 scoring average in his first collegiate season. Jin Nakao (72.91) also made a strong return after an injury in the fall of 2021 kept him off the course for a year, while Yaoting Zou posted a 73.56 average through 32 rounds.
