'Eaters, Tritons Settle for 0-0 Draw

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's soccer hosted UC San Diego Thursday night in Anteater Stadium as the sides played out a 0-0 tie.

UC IRVINE 0, UC SAN DIEGO 0
  • UC Irvine wore purple warmup shirts and purple accessories during the match in honor of their teammate, Jenika Davis, who was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia last season and has since beaten it and is in remission. She was also honored prior to the match.
  • The Anteaters were in control through the early going with nearly 80% of the possession in the first half and finishing with 64% possession over the course of the match
  • UCI put up nine first-half shots including four on frame. Tati Fung had the match's first two shots with one needed a save
  • Emilie Castagna got on the end of a pair of perfectly-placed services heading one just wide of the post and another needed a diving save by the Tritons
  • The 'Eaters kept on the attack with their best chance in the 33rd minute. A high, arching service bounced and landed to Alyssa Moore who volleyed a blast off the crossbar that stayed out
  • Another chance came in the 43rd minute starting off a corner that found Laila El Behery who created space in traffic and curled a quick shot up that again was saved on a leap
  • The match continued through the half scoreless and into the second stanza which was played more between the boxes
  • UC San Diego had the majority of the second-half chances including a 4-2 shot advantage, but could not turn any on target as the match would end scoreless
  • Glo Hinojosa returned from injury and stopped the only shot she needed to as the defense helped stifle the attack to the tune of six shots faced
  • UCSD's Keara Fitzgerald made five saves on UCI who finished with 11 shots
  • Hitting her 50th career match on the night was Laila El Behery, the seventh Anteater to do so in 2023 and 101st in program history
  • The Tritons continue to have UC Irvine's numbers now unbeaten (1-0-2) in three matches vs. UC Irvine since they joined the Big West and Division I

The Anteaters move to 4-6-4 on the season winless in their last three matches. At 1-2-3 on six points, UCI currently is on the outside looking in for a Big West Championship spot two points out of contention with four matches remaining. UCSD is one of the three schools two points ahead of UCI in the table at eight points and a 2-2-2 record. They are now 3-7-4 overall in 2023.

UCI has another chance to make up ground at home on Sunday, October 15. The match against UC Riverside kicks off at 6:00 p.m.
