Treinen's Blast Helps Erase No. 13 Cal State Fullerton's Win Streak

FULLERTON, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer made some noise in the Big West with an emphatic 2-1 victory Wednesday night at Titan Stadium to upset No. 13 Cal State Fullerton and put an abrupt end to their lengthy streaks.

UC IRVINE 2, #13 CAL STATE FULLERTON 1
  • Entering the match, Cal State Fullerton was ranked as high as 13th in the nation riding a streak of 11 straight without a loss (9-0-2) and eight consecutive victories
  • UCI got on the board early with a spectacular goal in the sixth minute. A set piece along the right edge of the 18-yard box was whipped in. Mathias Winum fought to keep it alive flicking it free toward the top of the box that Brady Treinen ran onto and volleyed near post and in for the 1-0 Anteater lead.
  • The 'Eaters wasted little time making it 2-0 as an counter attack led to the ball crossing back-and-forth through the 18-yard box before Francesco Montanile's cross was intercepted by the Titans, but dribbled behind the defense rolling inside the very same post all in the 10th minute.
  • Cal State Fullerton began their charge to get back in the match, and made up some ground in the 34th minute. Kyle Kirkland won a ball along the left wing and centered a ball once he got to the touchline that Fitz Williams found and punch by the near post and in to make it 2-1 going into the half.
  • The second half was scoreless, but plenty of chances for either side. Cal State Fullerton put up 11 of their 18 shots in the second half, and doubled up UCI all along the stat sheet as they attempted a comeback in shots (18-9), fouls (20-10), and all 11 corner kicks in the match
  • Luke Pruter made three saves in the match with the Anteater defense doing a superb job of not allowing many threatening shots and just four total on frame
  • Treinen's goal was the first of his career as he stands atop the team in points alongside Jake Means with five
  • Mathias Winum was instrumental in the goal and was rewarded with his first career assist and point coming in his 51st career match
  • The 10th-minute own goal goes down as the game-winner
  • The win is UCI's 15th all-time against an opponent ranked 13th or higher. In 2023, UCI is 1-1-1 against ranked teams, all in the top 13
  • UCI earns its first victory over a ranked foe since upending No. 12 UC Santa Barbara on the road in 2019
  • UC Irvine remains ahead all-time vs. Cal State Fullerton with a 29-24-9 record and 7-5-2 against the George Kuntz'-coached squad winning the last three

The win gets UCI right back in the Big West race now in a tie for fourth place at 2-2-1 with seven points. Overall, UCI goes back to .500 at 5-5-3. Cal State Fullerton remains atop the standings at 12 points now 4-1 with an overall record of 10-3-2. Their streaks ended at 11 straight without a loss and eight straight wins.
