IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine baseball got a dominant performance on the mound from
David Vizcaino pacing the 'Eaters to a 6-1 win Tuesday in Anteater Ballpark over San Diego.
MAKING THE PITCH
The first-year Anteater set the tone early getting the first three hitters for San Diego (27-16, 13-8) to flyout on just four pitches to get the Anteaters to the dugout. UCI (25-17, 10-8) would get to work with the bats with a double, a pair of sacrifices, and a triple to quickly take a 2-0 first-inning lead.
That was more than enough for Vizcaino mowing through the Torero lineup retiring the first 13 hitters he faced. USD finally got a baserunner in the fifth inning on a wide throw from
Dub Gleed that was caught at first by
Ben Fitzgerald who would tag the runner coming by as he left the base. After a conference of the umpires, the call was overturned to safe allowing USD's first baserunner. Vizcaino did not let that deter him quickly getting the final hitters of the inning.
The next inning, with USD still hitless on the game, they finally found one on a base hit from nine-hitter Dustin Allen to break up Vizcaino's no-hit bid with one out in the fifth. Allen saw his at-bat get extended on a dropped foul ball from
Justin Torres on a tough, running play heading toward the UCI bullpen. An error would put two Torero runners on base for the first time, but Vizcaino again navigated his way through on just 59 pitches through six innings.
Vizcaino would pitch into and through the seventh inning, still limiting his pitches and allowing a run on a long, solo home run by Jack Costello, but kept the USD bats in check throughout.
FINAL SCORE: UC IRVINE 6, SAN DIEGO 1
UCI's offense did their part as well adding to the pair of first-inning runs with three in the fourth and the sixth and final run in the fifth.
Caden Kendle led the bats going 3-for-4 scoring twice on the night. Fitzgerald had a pair of doubles out of the leadoff spot also scoring twice and driving in two runs to assume the team lead in RBIs.
Vizcaino really took over needing just 74 pitches in seven innings to drive UCI to its eighth win in nine midweek games. His own record improved to 3-0 allowing the only two USD hits on the evening without issuing a walk and striking out two.
Nick Rincover and
Jacob King finished the final two innings getting USD in order as UCI needed a total of 103 pitches to win Tuesday night.
"I try to keep it as simple as possible, just trying to go out there and compete and I know I have the guys behind me to make plays and the hitters that support with the runs." Vizcaino made just his six appearance on the season, all since the beginning of April, and third start lowering his already low ERA to 1.42. "I haven't gotten that deep in the game before where there's a perfect game or no-hitter, but I didn't really think about it. Just going out there and competing every pitch, every at-bat, and just let the game roll on."
The Anteaters get a good win against a quality San Diego program, now the sixth win for UC Irvine against a Quadrant 1 team on the year as UCI sits at 25-17 overall heading into a pivotal weekend against the top Big West squad and No. 25 UC Santa Barbara Friday. That series opener will start at 7:30 p.m. and be featured nationally on ESPNU.
Postgame Thoughts from head coach Ben Orloff
"David was really good, I mean really, really good. He was filling up the strike zone with everything, he was down in the zone, he was aggressive attacking the strike zone, his pitch count at 74 pitches in seven innings; it's really good to see him just keep getting better and better every single week. And yes, this is a good team in USD and it's a good offensive team, and he really had his way."
"It was a good, complete, offensive performance. We were an at-bat or two early in the game to put it a little more out of hand. Big performance from a lot of guys - Caden Kendle is awesome and was huge to get a lot of those run-scoring rallies started. The offense with four doubles, a triple, hit by pitch, three sac bunts, two sac flies, production from a lot of different guys. Some others like Church with five good at-bats and nothing to show for it, Nakawake with much of the same. Up and down through the lineup they did a really good job."
"We talked about it before the season how midweek games are about pitching depth, which we have a lot of, a deep lineup, and defense. I think the makeup of this team is a team that should perform well on Tuesdays, and it's good to see the results so far. We've seen just that - pitching depth from a lot of different guys, good defense, and nights like this where we score a good amount of runs with a bunch of contributions."
