Zhao Leads 'Eaters on Second Day of Big West Championships

LA QUINTA, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's golf team dropped one spot in the standings to sit in fourth place after the second round of the Big West Championships at La Quinta Country Club.
 
The Anteaters were 8-over on Monday afternoon, giving them a 36-hole total of 586 (290-296). They are four strokes back of CSUN in third and seven behind Long Beach State in second. UC Davis increased its lead as it remains the only team below par at 566 (-10).
 
The Aggies' Thomas Hutchison kept his three-stroke advantage in the individual race at 9-under 135.
 
Darien Zhao was UCI's top performer, coming in under par for the second-straight day. Zhao fired a 71 for a two-round score of 3-under 141 (70-71). He will enter tomorrow's final round in fourth place.
 
Henry Fitzhugh and Johnny Bai also held strong in the top-20 as they are both tied for 17th at 4-over 148. Fitzhugh matched his opening round score of 74 (+2), while Bai carded a 3-over 75 on Monday.
 
Nathan Irwin (73-77) and Kolbe Irei (74-76) dropped into a tie for 25th at 6-over 150.
 
The final 18 holes of the Big West Championships will be contested on Tuesday. UCI is paired with Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly with tee times starting at 8 a.m.
