Â
IRVINE, Calif. – The UC Irvine women's tennis team completed their 2021-22 season with nine wins and a whole host of notable moments and achievements from the veteran squad.
ON THE RECORD
The season began in the fall with three tournaments hosted by LBSU, CSUN, and the ITA with Anteaters taking home 23 singles wins and six doubles wins. The spring dual match season began with the CSUF Spring Invite adding four more singles wins and two doubles wins.
Topping the fall were newcomer
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico going 8-4 and
Alyssia Fossorier at 6-5. Doubles saw Fossorier team up with
Jessica Tsukiji for three fall wins and two from the newly-formed duo of Gonzalez-Rico and
Jenna Schlatter.
UCI dropped a Big West match out of the gate and finished just 1-8 in Big West matchups. UC Irvine managed points in 17 of their first 18 matches on the year and picked up eight wins in that span including over UC Riverside and Idaho.
The season culminated in the Big West Championships in San Diego, Calif. with a first round win over UCR for UCI's first tournament victory since 2018.
VETERAN LEADERSHIP
The nine-player Anteater squad was filled with upperclassmen led by their six seniors and grad students, junior
Jenna Schlatter, sophomores
Mia Totah and
Emily Fowler, and no freshman on the roster. UCI's only newcomer,
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, transfer as one of the best Division III tennis players onto UCI's squad and into the No. 1 singles position.
Gonzalez-Rico took the reins and finished as an All-Big West First-Teamer finishing with 20 overall wins, a 12-7 dual match record, and a team-high three Big West wins. Her highlight of the season was an upset win of Shakhnoza Khatamova from UC Santa Barbara ranked No. 88 in the nation. The win led to one of her two Big West Athlete of the Week honors, the lone accolades for the team this year.
"It's been a short but very memorable journey playing for UC Irvine! I am very grateful to have had this opportunity to play for a Division I school and compete with my teammates against some of the best teams and players in the country!"
The Anteaters also saw singles success from
Emily Fowler finishing 10-8 in dual match play, eight or more wins from two other Anteaters, and
Dasee Carter battling through injuries to go 7-6.
DYNAMIC DUO
Anteater doubles completed the season with a 35-34 dual match record. The pairing of Gonzalez-Rico and Schlatter took home All-Big West Honorable Mention honors from an 8-4 record at No. 2 doubles. Gonzalez-Rico finished 13-4 in doubles among three different partners.
Emily Fowler joined her with a 12-8 doubles mark including 7-4 with
Dasee Carter among all three doubles positions and a perfect 4-0 with Gonzalez-Rico.
Jessica Tsukiji and
Alyssia Fossorier went all the way as No. 1 partners scoring 10 wins over the season.
"It was a very special season and a very rewarding experience to be part of," said senior Jessica Tsukiji. "Being able to actually travel this year with the team after two years of COVID was really exciting! Competing in places like Portland and Hawai'i was super fun and those trips were definitely some of my favorite moments of the season. This year was full of ups and downs and ti was both physically and mentally exhausting, but I enjoyed every moment of it! It being my last season as a collegiate athlete, I didn't want to take it for granted. My goal this season was to go out playing the way I wanted to with no fear, and I think I did my best in accomplishing that. Having the support from my teammates, coaches, and my parents who came and cheered me on at almost every match made this season extra special for me. I loved that I could show up to practice and matches and be surrounded by many of my favorite people everyday. It was such a memorable season and a great way to wrap up my four years at UCI! Go 'Eaters!"
FORWARD THINKING
The Anteater squad led the way academically throughout the school year with the top women's team GPA for the fall and winter quarters. Seven different 'Eaters earned Dean's List status including five scoring it in each quarter. Eight Anteaters were also represented in the Big West Commissioner's Honor Roll.
UCI's women's tennis roster will look a lot different next season with six graduating seniors finishing out their Anteater careers:
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico,
Jessica Tsukiji,
Dasee Carter,
Megan Mansonhing,
Shreya Pavani, and
Alyssia Fossorier.
"It was a tough but very fun season," noted Dasee Carter. "I had the best time traveling and competing with the team and played some of my best tennis this season as well. I'm just extremely grateful to have shared those experiences with my teammates and will miss competing as an Anteater."
"The 2022 season will be one I'll never forget," said Megan Mansonhing. "Every trip was so memorable with competitive matches, good food, and fun sightseeing. Thank you so much to Betsy and Libby for taking time out of their busy lives to be there for us throughout the whole season and thanks to Liz for pushing us to do our best everyday. I couldn't have made it through four years without my teammates and my family supporting me each day. I can't wait to come back as an alum to cheer on the next team!"
"This past season was incredibly memorable for so many reasons. It was exciting to have a regular season after having COVID impact the last two years. A sense of normalcy was re-established and I'm really grateful for all the opportunities to travel and compete alongside my teammates. Most of all, I'm really proud of the work we put in all season long. The team chemistry this year was amazing and I could always feel my teammates' support on and off the court. Thank you so much to the coaches for their constant support and pushing us to do our best every day. The 2022 season was a great way to cap off my collegiate career. I'm so fortunate to have experience the past four years alongside a remarkable group of girls. Go 'Eaters!!"
