Women's Tennis Advances with 4-1 First Round Win

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's tennis gets a first round Big West Championship win Wednesday at Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego taking down UC Riverside, 4-1.

Anteater doubles scored an important early point as Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and Jenna Schlatter got a 6-2 set win, and Emily Fowler and Dasee Carter held on for he 7-5 win at No. 3 doubles to break the tie and go up, 1-0.

Singles saw four courts for UCI (9-15, 1-8) win the first set. Gonzalez-Rico at No. 1 and Schlatter at No. 3 made it a 3-0 lead with matching 6-1, 6-0 victories. UC Riverside (3-15, 0-9) got on the board with a straight set win at No. 6 before Dasee Carter put the finishing touch coming back from 2-0 down in the third set to win 6-2 on a 4-1 Anteater win.

Unfinished matches included Jessica Tsukiji and No. 2 singles and  Alyssia Fossorier at No. 4 each holding a 3-0 lead in their third set.

UCI moves on in the Big West Championship for the first time since 2017 as the 'Eaters head to the quarterfinals to face top-seeded UC Santa Barbara Thursday, April 28, at 9:00 a.m.
