Big Second Period Propels No. 5 UC Irvine Past No. 10 UC Davis, 13-8

IRVINE, Calif. – No. 5 UC Irvine topped No. 10 UC Davis, 13-8 at the Anteater Aquatic Complex Sunday afternoon.

The Anteaters took control, outscoring the Aggies 5-2 in second period to improve to 18-6 overall and 4-1 in the Big West. UCD falls to 15-11 on the year and 2-3 in conference games.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Graduate student Tara Prentice had a game-high six goals, scoring five in the first two periods. She dished three assists and was also dominate defensively, grabbing a season-best six steals.
>Junior Piper Smith totaled a season-high three goals
>Elena Flynn, Toni Shackelford, Kili Skibby and Isabel Rack each notched a goal for the Anteaters. Shackelford also had two steals in the win
> Sam Woo paced the Aggies with three goals
>In the cage, UCI's Faith Tedesco gobbled up nine saves, while UCD's Nellie McAdams had seven

FIRST PERIOD
>The Aggies scored first at 7:07 then again at 6:01
>Tara Prentice drew an exclusion and took advantage quickly netting a powerplay goal on two different possessions, the last tying the game at 2 all (4:04)
>UCD scored after an exclusion 3:07
>Elena Flynn hit a skip shot just after teams were even strength at 1:34
>Prentice stole the ball and lobbed it from mid-pool to give UCI the 4-3 lead with 7 seconds left

SECOND PERIOD
>Prentice would score again from the top at 7:37
>With time running on the shot clock Noelle Wijnbelt tipped in a ball for the Aggies to close to 5-4
>Following offensive foul, Prentice dished the ball to Piper Smith on left side where she scored at 6:26
>Smith then passed the ball across the pool to Toni Shackelford who fired in the back of the net at 5:48, 7-4
>UCI had goals by Kili Skibby at 2:43 and Prentice at 1:49 to take control, 9-4
>The Aggies would score form the left side to head to the break, trailing 9-5

THIRD PERIOD
>Confusion on the Aggie side led to a goal by Smith at 5:16
>The Aggies scored a pair of goals at 4:29 & 3:24 to end the scoring in the period, 10-7

FOURTH PERIOD
>Prentice was trailing the play and took a pass from Jessica Lynch and scored at 4:22
>Davis added a powerplay goal at 3:04 then UCI answered with a goal from Isabel Rack at 2:22, 12-8
>Smith swam it in for a score with 35 seconds left to end the scoring, 13-8

NOTES
>Jessica Lynch added three assists. She has 17 on the season
>The Anteaters shot .448 with 13 goals on 29 shots
