COTO DE CAZA, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is tied for first after two rounds of the Orange County Collegiate Classic Monday at Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club.
The Anteaters (304-284) made their move in the second round where they combined for a 284, which stood as the best team score of the day. They climbed three spots into a tie for first with co-host Cal State Fullerton as both squads posted a 36-hole total of 12-over 588.
Kolbe Irei currently sits atop the individual leaderboard as the only player below par at 1-under 143 (75-68). He jumped from ninth to first with a career-best 4-under 68 in the second round where he had six of his nine birdies. Irei had a strong finish with four consecutive birdies on holes 14-17.
Darien Zhao carded an even-par 144 (76-68) to tie for second. Zhao matched his career-best with a 68 in the second round to move up 16 spots in the standings. He tied Irei for the team lead with nine birdies on the day.
Henry Fitzhugh is also in the top-20 as he is tied for 18th with a 151 (78-73). In the second round, Fitzhugh eagled the par-5, 555-yard sixth hole.
Nathan Irwin is tied for 23rd at 152 (75-77), while
Ethan Han rounds out UCI's 5-count-4 lineup in a tie for 26th (153).
Johnny Bai,
Matt Gunson and
Trueman Park are also competing as individuals. Bai leads the trio in a tie for 15th with a 150 (77-73). Park is tied for 43rd (158), and Gunson is tied for 48th (159).
UC Irvine returns to Coto de Caza Golf & Racquet Club tomorrow for the final round which is set for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
