IRVINE, Calif. –
The UC Irvine men's tennis team picked up its first win of the dual match season, defeating Grand Canyon, 4-0, in its home opener Friday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The 'Eaters have now won nine-straight home matches, a streak that dates back to March 8, 2020.

UCI (1-2) made quick work of the Lopes (0-7) in doubles, starting on court three where Ali Amiri and Emmanuel Coste took down Adrien Coulome/Stan De Samucewicz, 6-1.

Moments later, Riccardo Roberto and Lawee Sherif clinched the point with a 6-3 triumph over Mariano Argote/Jiri Novak at the top of the lineup. Matthew Sah and Thomas Smart were also up, 5-4, at No. 2 before the match went unfinished.

Roberto continued to roll in singles as he was first off the court after dispatching Novak, 6-0, 6-2, at the second position. Sah then gave the Anteaters a 3-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Coulome on court five.

With four matches still going, it was Sherif who delivered the final blow. After cruising to a 6-2 victory in his opening set, Sherif found himself down, 4-1, in the second, but battled back for an impressive 7-6 victory against Freddie Grant at No. 3.

UC Irvine returns to Anteater Tennis Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 6, when it plays host to San Francisco at 11 a.m.
