'Eaters Start Big West with 19-5 Win

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- UC Irvine women's water polo left no doubt Saturday afternoon at Matador Pool disposing of No. 24 CSUN, 19-5.

For the fifth time this season, UC Irvine (9-3, 1-0) had their defense humming from the start shutting out the Matadors (3-4, 0-1) in the first period. Jessica Lynch put in two quick goals to start UCI off with a 4-0 lead.

The offense made its presence known in the second period scoring eight times to increase their lead to 12-3. UCI scored the match's first seven goals before allowing one to CSUN with 5:11 left in the half.

After scoring the final goal of the first half in the final 10 seconds, Isabel Rack started the second half scoring at 6:19. The Anteater lead ballooned to 15-3 before a pair of Matador goals in the final minutes for a 15-5 game after three periods.

The 'Eaters mirrored their first period performance in the last frame scoring four more times and not allowing any to CSUN to finish the victory off, 19-5.

Rack led all scorers with three goals as 12 different Anteaters found the back of the net and five others had multiple goals in the match. Kennedy East was one of them and added two assists. Faith Tedesco went the distance in cage stopping seven shots.

UCI is now 1-0 in Big West play and finishes the week with a pair of wins to up their win streak to four straight. Next up is the big Barbara Kalbus Invitational hosted by UC Irvine that starts Friday, February 25. The 'Eaters' opening match will be against UC San Diego at 3:00 p.m. at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
