Anteaters Defeat George Fox After Seattle U Loss

BEAVERTON, Ore. --- UC Irvine women's tennis played a doubleheader in Oregon dropping the opener, 4-3, to Seattle University at Tualatin Hill Tennis Center before collecting its first win of 2022 at George Fox University, 9-0.

Loss 4-3 vs. Seattle U
UCI's morning match pitted a pair of winless squads against each other. Doubles was played first, and it came down to the final set as Seattle (1-5) took court No. 3 and Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico and partner Dasee Carter making her 2022 debut won 6-1 to even things up. The Redhawks pulled through to win No. 1 doubles and score the 1-0 lead on the doubles point.

Singles play started with an early Anteater point on a retirement at No. 3 singles. Seattle U grabbed the lead back with straight set wins at Nos. 2 and 6 singles. Gonzalez-Rico helped draw within 3-2 winning in straight sets at No. 1. Emily Fowler fought after losing her opening set to win set two and come from down 3-0 in set three for the win at No. 4 singles, but it was not enough as SU closed things down for the 4-3 win.

Emily Fowler - Today was a tough fight. I was forced to raise my level of play and grind every point of my match. I competed well and ended up on top. Shoutout to Coach Libby and my teammate Jenna for helping me through my match and keeping me focused! As a team I think we showed a lot of intensity and good energy. The match didn't go our way, but I'm really proud of everyone for putting in their all! Go 'Eaters!"

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico - "Iam very proud of our cheering today, both from people playing and players not on the court. It was fun to play doubles with Dasee for her first match of the season! Singles was very tough playing another lefty and I'm glad I got the win. I love playing indoors! Looking forward to our next two matches. Rip Em 'Eaters!"

Win 9-0 vs. George Fox
The evening matchup at Division III George Fox was all Anteaters playing DIII rules and picking up wins in all nine matches. Doubles won 24 of 28 games for all three points.led by a Fossorier / Tsukiji sweep.

Singles was a clean sweep as well with Jessica Tsukiji picking up her first singles win at No. 1 singles. All six Anteaters scored straight set wins including firsts for Shreya Pavani in singles and doubles and also Megan Mansonhing in singles.

The trip to Oregon ends Sunday with one final match back at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center against Portland State with first serve at 10:00 a.m.
