Â
· UCI clinched a berth Wednesday with a point in a 2-2 draw with UCSB. UCI came back twice with a set piece curler from Ashish Chattha in the 52nd minute and Mario Anaya's rebound putback in the 64th minute in a match that was made up from October 15 after multiple lightning delays led to a postponement.
· UCI's solidified its seeding Saturday vs. UC San Diego winning 1-0. Defender Nolan DiCenzo slid home a rebound off a set piece in the 35th minute. He and the defense also pitched a shutout to put the Anteaters unbeaten in their last four. DiCenzo, for his efforts, took home the team's third and his first Big West Freshman of the Week award joining the pair earned by Agaton Pourshahidi
· The Anteaters bring four players into their third tournament in their careers. Oscar Cervantes has 243 minutes over his three matches to lead the returners followed by Ricardo Ibarra with 209, Kwabena Boateng at 184, and Eddy Berumen with 123 minutes over two matches. Eight other Anteaters return after registering minutes in the 2021 Big West Tournament including goal scorer Francesco Montanile.
· Robert Mejia brings tournament experience with seven matches played over three tournaments at UC Davis including a title in 2019. Mejia scored twice in a win over CSU Bakersfield and added an assist in the 2019 title match win over UCSB.
· The Big West Tournament begins Wednesday. UCI is the No. 3 seed for the third time. Previously, they won the title as the 3-seed in 2009 but bowed out in the first round in 2019. Elsewhere, CSUN will host UC Davis in the other Wednesday contest
· UCI's first round opponent will be Sacramento State who claimed the No. 6 seed and returns to Anteater Stadium after falling, 1-0, in a match on October 8 behind a second half Ashish Chattha goal. UCI and Sac State have met one other time in the tournament which was UCI's only first round victory in three tries collecting a 2-0 victory back in 2014. Sac State is looking to advance past the first round for just the second time as they appear in their fourth tournament.
· The team that advances will head to UC Santa Barbara for the semifinal Saturday. UC Riverside claimed the regular season crown and top-seed. The final is set for Saturday, November 12 with the highest remaining seed to host it. One new rule is that overtime returns with two 10-minute periods, but there will be no golden goal. Teams must play all 20 minutes, and will go to a shootout if they remain even.
· UC Irvine makes its 11th trip to the tournament in its 14th iteration. UCI has four titles and reached the final on six occasions, but has not won it all since 2013. Overall, the 'Eaters are 10-4-3 in tournament matches and 7-2-3 in home matches.
