UCI will hit the road, traveling to UC Santa Barbara Thursday (Oct. 27) for a 7:00 p.m. match at the Thunderdome then stopping at CSUN Saturday for a 5:00 p.m. contest at the Matadome.
STORYLINES
The Anteaters are 13-7 overall and 6-4 in the Big West.
UCI is 2-4 on the road. The Anteaters last win away from Irvine came against UC Riverside, 3-0 on Oct. 1.
UCI improved to 10-1 at home this season with a 3-2 win over CSU Bakersfield and 3-1 victory against Cal Poly last week. UCI snapped the Mustangs' six-match winning streak.
A reverse sweep by UCSB is the only defeat at the Bren Center this season.
UCI ranks 19th in the country in opponents' hitting percentage with a .162 mark.
The Anteaters rank second in The Big West in kills (13.51), assists (12.67), blocks (2.57) and digs (15.91).
UC Santa Barbara is 12-8 overall and 8-2 in the Big West.
UCSB is a perfect 6-0 at home this season.
The Gauchos are coming off a 3-1 loss at Hawaii.
In the first meeting at the Bren Center, UC Santa Barbara totaled 17 blocks and the Anteaters hit .170 (63-34-171), then-the second lowest percentage of the season. Marianna Bertolone topped UCI with a career-high 20 kills and four total blocks. Tallulah Froley led the Gauchos, tying her career-high with 18 kills.
CSUN enters the week 7-15 overall and 2-8 in the Big West
The Matadors have lost the last three outings, including a 3-0 defeat at Hawaii.
UCI swept the Matadors 3-0 behind Joy Umeh's match-high 14 kills. Onye Ofoegbu followed with 12 kills and a match-best six block assists. Nicole Nevarez led CSUN with nine kills.
Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu is eight solo blocks and one block assist shy of breaking into the UCI all-time Top 10 list. She currently has 40 solos and 270 assists. The middle blocker is looking to catch Idara Akpakpa (2015-18) who is in 10th for solos (48) and Taryn Robertson (2006-09) who is 10th in block assists at 271.
ANTEATERS EARN BIG WEST WEEKLY AWARDS
Joy Umeh honored as Big West Offensive Player of the Week, while Campbell Jensen was named the Big West Freshman of the Week. It is the second time this season each student-athlete has garnered the accolade with Umeh earning the fourth of her career. Umeh is the lone woman in the 2022 season to claim Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions.
Umeh posted averages of 4.67 kills, 1.11 digs, 0.89 blocks and 5.11 points in nine sets played. The junior led UC Irvine in the win against CSU Bakersfield with a season-high 24 kills while adding six digs and four block assists. The next night she had 18 kills, while hitting .317 (18-5-41) against the Mustangs. She added four more block assists and four digs as well.
Jensen averaged 5.78 digs per set last week. The libero matched her career-high with 29 digs versus CSUB, while adding two aces and nine set assists. Her 29 digs are tied for fifth most this season by a Big West player.
The freshman followed that up with 23 digs versus Cal Poly,
LIVIN' LIBERO LOCO
Campbell Jensen leads the Big West and is ranked 28th nationally with a 4.87 average.
The freshman has recorded digs in double-digit 15 times, including 20 or more on nine occasions, including each of the last four outings.
She also has 15 aces, including five over the last three matches.
VEARGASON HEATS UP
Opposite Ellen Veargason tied a career-high with eight kills in the win over the Roadrunners then improved on that mark with 10 versus Cal Poly.
Against the Mustangs, she hit .750 (6-0-8) to lead the Anteaters to a first set victory.
She had 10 blocks assists over the two matches.
On the season, the sophomore is averaging 1.27 kills and 1.00 block per set.
KEYING ON KIANI
Middle blocker Kiani Stanton recorded a career-high 10 kills in the win over the Roadrunners then followed it up with nine kills against the Mustangs.
She led the squad in blocking in the CSUB match with eight block assists and is averaging 1.08 blocks per set overall. The redshirt junior is also averaging 1.32 kills per set.
