UC Irvine Falls to SDSU in Final Match of the Husky Invitational

SEATTLE - The UC Irvine women's volleyball team fell to San Diego State in straight sets (17-25, 22-25, 22-25) in their final match of the Husky Invitational Sunday at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Aztecs (2-1), who are in their first year in the new Pac-12, hit .340, while holding the Anteaters to .108.
BY THE NUMBERS: Freshman middle Taylor Boice and junior outside hitter Madison Triplett tied for the team lead with seven kills each. Triplett added eight digs, while Boice committed just one error on 16 attempts (.375).
Senior setter Nicole Feliciano finished with 10 assists and a team-high nine digs. Sophomore setter Angelina Dellutri also dished out 13 assists.
Layla Austin paced SDSU with a match-high 18 kills on .586 hitting (18-1-29).
HOW IT HAPPENED: It went back-and-forth with five ties to start the first set. A Boice kill and a San Diego State hitting error gave UC Irvine a 7-5 lead before the Aztecs went on a 10-3 run to go up by five. The Anteaters closed the gap to three on two occasions, but that was the closest they would get as SDSU finished strong for the 25-17 victory. San Diego State hit .500 (18-3-30) in the opening set and was led by Austin, who had nine kills.
The Aztecs created some separation early in set two and extended their lead to 16-10. The 'Eaters then put together a 6-2 spurt, capped by an Abby Pekrul solo block and a Dellutri ace, to make it a two-point game. SDSU answered with a couple points, but UCI continued to put the pressure on with back-to-back kills from Memphis Burnett and Pekrul making it 20-18. San Diego State regained control, taking set point at 24-19, before three consecutive unforced errors brought UC Irvine back within two. After calling a timeout, the Aztecs got the final kill for the 25-22 win.
SDSU scored the first three points of the third frame and stayed out front until kills from Kaia Ciszewski, Triplett, and Boice tied it up at 5-all. The Anteaters proceeded to take a 7-6 advantage on an Izzy Romero ace. After trading points, San Diego State built some momentum with an 8-3 rally that put them ahead by four (15-11) at the media timeout. UCI kept it close and came within one at 23-22 following an ace from Tata Vongfak, but the Aztecs responded with a couple kills to secure the 25-22 victory.
UP NEXT: UC Irvine (0-3) will make its way to the Central Valley for the Bulldog Invitational. The Anteaters are slated to face New Mexico State (Sept. 3), Southern Utah (Sept. 4), and tournament host Fresno State (Sept. 5).
