IRVINE, Calif. – Ninth-ranked UC Irvine took control in the fourth period to beat No. 15 San Jose State, 13-10 at the Anteater Aquatics Complex Saturday afternoon.

The Anteaters out-scored the Spartans 3-1 in the final period to win the conference opener and improve to 11-8 on the season. SJSU goes to 5-11 overall, dropping their sixth consecutive contest.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Dylan Patist led UCI with four goals, moving into the team lead with 32 overall. He had an assist and a steal as well
>Tyler Padua had a hat-trick, scoring two of his three goals in the final frame. He also added a team-high three steals
>Jackson Matos notched two goals and a steal
>Ethan Shipman, Zlatan Nikocevic, Stewart Campbell and Zachary Baxter each scored a goal in the win
>Shipman had a team-best three assists
>Goalkeeper Jacob Pyle recorded four saves, while SJSU's Zoltan Der had seven saves in the cage
>The Anteaters were 4-6 on the powerplay and out-shot SJSU 30-26
>San Jose State was led by Nikola Nikolic and Javi Ibanez with two goals each

FIRST PERIOD
>After UCI won the sprint, Ethan Shipman fired a ball in the back of the cage from up top on a powerplay at 6:55 from a pass by Jake Liechty, 1-0
>SJSU skipped it in on a powerplay from set at 4:37, 1-1
>Thomas Cass was on the left side and found Zachary Baxter in the hole where he scored at 2:07, 2-1
>Zlatan Nikocevic followed with a goal at 1:23 to put the Anteaters up 3-1
>A UCI exclusion helped the Spartans score with 49 seconds left in the period, 3-2

SECOND PERIOD
>San Jose State knotted the score with 6:57 on a man advantage, 3-3
>Tyler Padua was battling down low and falling to his left as he scored at 6:57, 4-3
>SJSU would score on the counter at 4:13, 4-4
>UCI quickly answered with a goal by Jackson Matos at 3:45, 5-4
>A perfect pass to SJSU's Javi Ibanez gave him one-on-one with the goalie at 2:23, 5-5
> Dylan Patist then took over the scoring at 1:54 and again at 1:16 to give UCI a 7-5 lead
>The Spartans added a goal (0:55) before Patist found the back of the net again with 29 seconds left to end half, 8-6

THIRD PERIOD
>Both teams struggled to score until the Spartans found the back of the cage at 3:49 and on a power play at 3:00 to even the game at 8 all
>Stewart Campbell banged the ball off the cage into the net at 2:34, 9-8
>After confusion on an Anteater exclusion, Bende Pardi had an open net for the Spartans to tie it 9-9 with six second
>Matos fired a shot from mid-pool as time ran out that slipped through the keeper's hands to give UCI a 10-9 advantage

FOURTH PERIOD
>SJSU drew a five-meter penalty and scored at 7:15, 10-10
>Out of timeout, Campbell fed Padua who pushed it in goal at 5:53, 11-10
>Padua raised out of the water, took a pass from Nikocevic and buried it in the twine to put UCI ahead, 12-10 at 4:31
>Goalkeeper Jacob Pyle would save a shot on a Spartan powerplay at 3:10 before Patist scored on the other end at 2:55, 13-10
