IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women's indoor track & field returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center this weekend for the UNM Team Open on Saturday, Jan. 29. The Anteaters have 22 athletes entered in 14 events.
 
STORYLINES
• UC Irvine is making the second of its three scheduled trips to Albuquerque during the 2022 indoor campaign.
• The Anteaters opened their season with the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Collegiate Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 22.
• It was their first indoor meet since the 2020 MPSF Championships (Feb. 28-29, 2020).
• Six different 'Eaters combined to establish eight top-10 marks in program history last weekend.
• Deandra Tyler (WT, SP) and Aryel Coats (60m, 200m) both made their way into the top-10 in multiple events.
• Tyler and Coats were competing in their first collegiate indoor meet after the cancellation of the 2021 season.
• The MPSF Championships will look different this year with the departure of the Pac-12 schools.
• In 2022, the championship meet will feature nine women's teams from the Big West and West Coast Conferences.
• It will also be held at The Podium in Spokane, Washington, for the first time.
 
THROWS
• In her first collegiate indoor competition, Deandra Tyler cracked UCI's all-time top-10 in both throwing events.
• Tyler currently ranks eighth in the weight throw (46-11) and ninth in the shot put (39-08).
 
DISTANCE/MIDDLE DISTANCE
• Cathy Salazar-Gasca led the 'Eaters in the mile at the Dr. MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational last Saturday.
• She notched a personal-record 5:09.12 (5:02.39aa) to come in 13th out of 39 competitors.
• Salazar-Gasca's altitude-adjusted time puts her at No. 5 among UCI's all-time leaders.
• Hannah Chau also improved her No. 9 mark in school history by two seconds as she clocked in at 5:08.22aa.
• Morgan Jennings added the Anteaters' 10th-fastest 600m time, crossing the finish line in 1:41.66.
• This weekend, Montgomery Allison, Olivia Liuson and Anna Vogtmann will be making their collegiate indoor debuts.
• Emma McCarthy, Alexis Alexander and Jennifer Daly are slated to run the 800m for the second-straight week.
• McCarthy led the trio in the season opener with an altitude-adjusted time of 2:20.06.
 
SPRINTS/HURDLES
• In the sprints, Aryel Coats owns the seventh-fastest 60m (7.83aa) and 200m (25.40aa) times in indoor school history.
• True freshman Reyna Johnson won her prelim heat to automatically qualify for the 60m hurdle final last weekend.
• Johnson had the fourth-fastest prelim time at 8.84aa, which is ninth all-time at UC Irvine.
 
JUMPS
• Johnson was also UCI's top performer in the long jump at the Dr. MLK Jr. Collegiate Invitational (17-06).
• On Saturday, Johnson will be joined by Coats, Chaselyn Amos, Shaelyn Amos and Kayla Rodriguez in the LJ.
• Pole vaulters Phoebe Roach and Laura Sangiacomo are also scheduled to appear in their first collegiate indoor meet.
 
UP NEXT
• UC Irvine will make its way back to Albuquerque for the final time in 2022 for the Don Kirby Elite Invite, Feb. 11-12.
