IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's tennis team kicks off its fall season this weekend with the Hagedorn Hidden Dual in San Diego, Oct. 1-3, and the start of the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma (Oct. 2-10).
Graduate transfers Emmanuel Coste and Riccardo Roberto will be making their way to Tulsa as they are the first Anteaters invited to the ITA All-American Championships since Sebastian Heim, Luis Lopez and Luca Marquard in 2017. The 2020 tournament was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"I'm excited for UCI men's tennis to be returning to the ITA All-American; it's one of the most prestigious college tennis events of the year," said UC Irvine head coach Mike Saunders. "Both Riccardo and Emmanuel have proven that they are among the best in the nation. I can't wait for their journey as Anteaters to get underway."
Roberto will open the tournament for the UCI duo in the pre-qualifying singles round (Oct. 2-3), which features 256 players vying for 16 spots in the qualifying round. Coste, who came in at No. 63 in the ITA Preseason Rankings, earned one of 112 automatic bids in the qualifying round and is set to begin play on Oct. 4.
Coste and Roberto were also featured at No. 53 in the preseason doubles rankings and will compete in the qualifying doubles draw, Oct. 4-5.
Senior Mike Mkrtchian, juniors Ali Amiri and Matthew Sah, and sophomore Thomas Smart will head south for the Hagedorn Hidden Dual, hosted by the University of San Diego. They are set to compete against Denver, Kennesaw State and USD with four singles and two doubles matches starting at 10 a.m. each day. Action gets underway Friday and runs through Sunday.
Mkrtchian tied for the team lead with nine dual-match singles victories last year. The Reseda, California, native closed out the regular season on a seven-match win streak, and finished Big West play with a perfect 6-0 record.
Sah earned All-Big West honorable mention recognition in doubles in 2021 after going 7-5 overall and 3-0 in conference play. Sah is from San Diego where he attended Torrey Pines High School. Amiri also had four singles wins last year, while Smart appeared in seven matches as a true freshman.
