Farmer in Eighth After Day 1 of Decathlon at NCAA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. -
Josh Farmer opened the NCAA Championships with the first five events of the decathlon Wednesday at Hayward Field, and had an impressive start as he sits in eighth place with 3,966 points.
 
Farmer posted a top-eight finish in both the 100m and 400m, with a personal best in the latter event. In the 100m, the first event of the day, he recorded the seventh-fastest time in the field, crossing the finish line in 10.94 seconds for 874 points.
 
In the long jump, Farmer notched a solid mark of 22-08 (6.91m) on his third and final attempt after fouling on his first two.
 
The San Diego native then opened the shot put with a toss of 43-03 (13.18m), before seeing a two-foot improvement on his next throw at 45-03 (13.79m) to place 11th. He also tied for 14th in the high jump, clearing 6-02.25 (1.89m).
 
Farmer closed out the day on a high note, coming in second in the 400m with a personal-record 48.61. He shaved .18 seconds off his previous best for 880 points, which vaulted him four spots into the top-eight.
 
Farmer returns to Hayward Field tomorrow for the final five events of the decathlon. Action gets underway with the 110m hurdles at 9:30 a.m., while the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500m will follow.
