UC Irvine Athletics Announces Hall of Fame Class of 2021

IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine has announced nine new members will join the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2021. The inductees are Ryan Bailey (men's water polo), John Chin (men's golf), Mike Gillespie (baseball coach), Charles Jock (men's track), Jerry Maras (Men's basketball/baseball), Chesea Nagata (women's swimming), Bob Olson (Administrator), Tanya Taylor (women's soccer), and Kelly Wing (women's volleyball).

The class features two Olympians, an NCAA individual champion, an NCAA team champion, six All-Americans, a legendary coach and a historian.

Due to the pandemic, a ceremony will not be held in 2021, recognizing the class in an event to be announced in 2022.
 
"Bringing back the Hall of Fame has infused so much pride into our department." Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Paula Smith said. "While we won't be holding an in-person ceremony this year, we didn't want to wait to announce all of these deserving individuals and will honor them as we lead up to an event next year. Once again this class is exceptional and a true representation of UC Irvine."

The UCI Athletics Hall of Fame began in 1983 and re-established after a 13-year hiatus in 2020.  There are 77 previous inductees over 17 different sports. Four individuals have also received the Alumnus of Merit Award, which had been announced in conjunction with the Hall of Fame.

The Class of 2021:
RYAN BAILEY                                                 MEN'S WATER POLO                         1994-1998
Ryan Bailey was a three time All-American (1995, 1996, 1998) including first team All-America in 1998. He scored 263 points in four seasons at UCI and was honored as the Mountain Pacific Player of the Year as a senior. Over his four years, he helped the Anteaters to a 62-27 record and a fourth-place finish nationally in 1995. He competed in four Olympic Games for Team USA (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012), claiming a silver medal in 2008. Bailey was a member of the USA Water Polo Men's Senior National Team, leading Team USA to four gold medals at the Pan American Games and a FINA World League silver medal. He was inducted into the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2019.

JOHN CHIN                                                     MEN'S GOLF                                        2006-2010
John Chin is UCI's only NCAA Division I men's golf All-American, earning the distinction as a senior. He is also the only individual in program history to receive multiple All-Region (2008, 2009) and Big West Player of the Year (2008, 2009, 2010) awards. He won the Big West individual title in 2008 and 2010, and was a three-time first-team all-conference honoree. In his four years at UCI, Chin was part of three Big West Championship teams (2007, 2008, 2010) and made four consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, helping the 2008 squad advance to the NCAA Division I Championships where they finished 20th overall. As a senior, Chin, had a 70.05 average with eight top-five finishes, ranking No. 1 in the final Golfstat Cup and No. 2 in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings. In August 2018, Chin became the first UCI men's golf alum to earn his PGA Tour card, finishing 10th on the Web.com Tour money list after a runner-up showing at the WinCo Foods Portland Open to secure his PGA membership for the 2018-19 season.

MIKE GILLESPIE                                            HEAD COACH, BASEBALL                2007-2018 
Mike Gillespie coached UC Irvine for 11 seasons (2007-2018), leading the Anteaters to the College World Series in 2014. One of the most decorated and respected collegiate coaches was named National Coach of the Year by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association that same year. He was honored as Big West Coach of the Year in 2009 after guiding the 'Eaters to the conference title. Under Gillespie, the Anteaters made five postseason appearances, including regional titles in 2008, 2011 and 2014. He amassed a 1,156-886-2 record overall in 31 seasons as a Division I head coach, retiring as the program's winningest coach at 393 victories. His number 19 was retired at UCI in 2018, one of only three individuals to have a number retired at UCI. Gillespie is one of only two men to win a CWS championship as a player and coach, garnering American Baseball Coaches Association and USC Hall of Fame inductions.

CHARLES JOCK                                            MEN'S TRACK & FIELD                      2009-2012
Charles Jock was the 2012 NCAA individual champion in the 800m, marking UCI's first individual national title in 34 years. He was named one of 10 semifinalists for The Bowerman, which is collegiate track & field's highest award. He was the 800m NCAA runner-up in 2011 and finished among the top-10 in 2010. He was a three-time All-American and three-time Big West Track Athlete of the Year. Jock won the Big West title in the 800m as a sophomore and senior, and was also part of the Anteaters' 4x400 relay that claimed four-straight conference championships (2009-12). While still a student-athlete at UC Irvine, Jock finished third at the 2011 USA Championships in a school-record 1:44.67, earning him a spot on the U.S. Team for the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea. As a sophomore, he won gold and established a meet record in the 800m at the NACAC U-23 Track & Field Championships (1:45.65). Following his graduation in 2012, Jock qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, after finishing third in the 800m at the U.S. Team Trials, becoming UCI's first track & field alum to earn an Olympic berth since Steve Scott in 1988.
 
JERRY MARAS                                               MEN'S BASKETBALL/BASEBALL    1972-75
Jerry Maras was a star in both baseball and basketball at UCI...In basketball, he led the Anteaters in scoring during the 1973-74 (16.5) and 1974-75 (16.1) seasons. He ranks 20th in career points (1,212), fifth in points per game (15.5), 11th in rebounds (614) and fifth in rebounds per game (7.9) in the UCI record books. On the diamond, the pitcher went 9-3 with a 1.50 earned run average in 1973, the lowest single season ERA at UCI. That year he struck out 83 in 84 innings and threw 11 consecutive complete games, second-most in a season, posting five shutouts, a single-season record. He struck out a single-game record, 16 batters on April 14, 1973 against UNLV. Also in that game, his program-record consecutive scoreless innings streak of 33.2 innings was snapped after he threw three consecutive complete game shutouts, including one against the No. 1 team in Division I and defending NCAA champion, USC. Maras had a complete game shutout in the 1973 NCAA Championship series against Ithaca helping UCI to its first Division II College World Series title and was named to the College World Series All-Tournament Team. While at UCI, he was a member of three NCAA Tournament squads and both College World Series championship teams in 1973 and 1974.
 
CHELSEA NAGATA                                       WOMEN'S SWIMMING                        2005-08
Chelsea Nagata was a two-time All-American, earning 2006 Big West Athlete of the Year accolades. She swam the 100-yard butterfly in 53.11 seconds to place eighth at the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships. Nagata had a school-record time of 52.73 to finish fourth in the 100 butterfly preliminaries that year and a UCI-record in the 100 backstroke in 54.55 seconds to finish 24th. She earned All-Big West honors all four years, capturing a Big West title  in the 100 butterfly (2008, 07, 06, 05), 100 backstroke (2008, 07, 06), 50 freestyle (2006), 800 free relay (2008), 200 medley relay (2007, 06). Nagata was named a Collegeswimming.com Mid-Major All-American three times and was honored as the UCI/Big West Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2007 & 2008.
 
BOB OLSON                                                   ASSOCIATE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR   1982-2017
Bob Olson is the ultimate historian of UCI Athletics. He joined the UCI staff as sports information director in July 1982 and was named assistant athletic director of communications in 1991 and associate athletic director of communications in the fall of 2006. Since beginning work in July of 1982, Olson never missed a men's basketball game, a streak that stands at 1,062 games. The Minnesota native, received the prestigious 25-year award from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 2007, garnering six CoSIDA awards for media guides, including three that were selected as "Best in the Nation." He has served as press room and communications coordinator for several NCAA Division I men's basketball West Regionals and First and Second Rounds during his tenure, while being a member of the United States Basketball Writers Association and the Big West Conference Basketball Tournament Committee. He previously served on the Board of Directors of the Orange County Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. While men's basketball, men's water polo, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field and men's golf were his primary sports, he covered every sport at some point until he retired in 2017.  
 
TANYA TAYLOR                                            WOMEN'S SOCCER                            2007-2010
Tanya Taylor is one of two women's soccer players to earn National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American distinction in 2010. She was also named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-West Region First Team in 2010. The 2010 Big West Conference Offensive Player of the Year captained UCI's first team to reach the NCAA Tournament (2010) then advancing on to the Sweet Sixteen. She was the first Anteater to record double digits in goals (11) and assists (12) in a single season. The three-time All-Big West honoree, ranks first in UCI assists in a season (12) as well as tied for first in assists in a single game (3), games started in a single season (24), games played in a single season (24), second in all-time points scored in a season (34) and third all-time for career games played (83) and assists (21) as well as ranking fourth all-time in UCI career points (69) and goals (24). She was honored as the Lauds and Laurels Outstanding Student Athlete Award (2011). Taylor was a member of Haiti's national women's soccer team (2011-2012) before becoming the first Anteater to be drafted to the pros with Boston Breakers of the National Women's Soccer League.
 
KELLY WING                                                   WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL                   2001-04
Kelly Wing was a three-time first team All-Big West honoree, garnering Big West Player of the Year accolades in 2004. She was a two-time AVCA All-American and three-time AVCA All-West Region selection. Over her career, Wing was named Big West Player of the Week seven times, the most by any Anteater. She led the Anteaters to back-to-back NCAA appearances in 2003 and 2004. Wing tops the UCI record book and ranks second all-time in the Big West in kills (2,267) and attack attempts (5,599) as well as being the Big West leader in attack attempts in a season with 1,868 in 2003. She put away 764 kills in 2003 which ranks second in the Big West history. She is also the UCI school record holder in all-time aces with 172. Wing owns 11 of the top 14 marks for kills in a match at UCI.
