UCI Suffers 3-1 Loss To Long Beach State

Box Score LONG BEACH, Calif. – UC Irvine won the first set, but Long Beach State would go on to win the next three for a 3-1 victory (22-25, 25-20, 25-17, 25-13) at the Walter Pyramid Friday.

The 13th-ranked Anteaters (2-7, 2-3) would hit .323 in the first set then ended the match at just .202 (47-25-109). Conversely, No. 7 Beach (2-1, 2-1) hit .194 then ended at .357 (52-12-112).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Outside hitter Joel Schneidmiller led the Anteaters with 15 kills, seven digs, three block assists and an ace
>Redshirt freshman Doug Dahm followed with a career-high 13 kills and a career-best five digs
>Middle blocker Scott Stadick and opposite Jonny Bowles added six kills, while Stadick had three blocks
>Freshman Connor Campbell had a career-best four kills and three total blocks (1, solo, 2 assisted)
>LBSU had a trio of players with double-figure kills led by Spencer Olivier with 17 kills. Simon Torwie (12) and Clark Godbold (10).

HEAD COACH DAVID KNIFFIN SAID
"We had a really clean first set and I think that demonstrates two things. One, we can play with and beat anyone. Two, we need to play more consistently. Connor Campbell continues to impress me with what he is doing. We had four freshmen on the court today and they all continue to improve."

FIRST SET
>UCI gained a 9-7 lead on kills by Connor Campbell and Joel Schneidmiller
>A 4-1 run which included two kills and block assist by Schneidmiller forced a Beach timeout, 17-13
>A pair of UCI attack errors helped LBSU back to 18-17, but a block by Schneidmiller and Scott Stadick gave some cushion, 19-17
>Consecutive kills by Schneidmiller and Zhai gave UCI the set 25-22
>UCI held a 3-0 block advantage

SECOND SET
>LBSU would score three straight with the help of two UCI errors and snuck out to a 8-5 lead
>A UCI service error and two more attack errors gave The Beach the 12-8 advantage
>Long Beach State put down three straight kills to open a 18-16 margin
>A kill by Stadick, a solo block by Campbell and kills by Jonny Bowles and Doug Dahm edged UCI to 21-20
>LBSU responded with the next four points, three on UCI errors to take the set, 25-20

THIRD SET
>Back-to-back kills by Dahm on two nice defensive team possessions got UCI out to a 5-2 lead
>Two UCI miscues and an ace by Olivier Spencer moved LBSU in front 10-8
>The Anteaters would close to 19-17 on an Alexandre Nsakanda kill
>Long Beach would then peel off the next six points to win the set 25-17

FOURTH SET
>The Beach jumped out to the quick 3-0 lead until Stadick put down a kill in the middle
>A pair of kills and a triple block gave LBSU the 8-4 lead
>Five unanswered, which included four blocks extended The Beach lead to 18-10
>Long Beach State never looked back firing two aces to end the set, 25-13

>UCI remains winless on the road (0-5)
>Redshirt freshman Cole Gillis made the start at libero and had four digs
