IRVINE, Calif. -
The UC Irvine men's tennis team did not drop a set in a 7-0 sweep of Portland State (7-6) Wednesday afternoon at Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The 'Eaters (5-4), who were coming off back-to-back losses to top-25 opponents, returned to the win column in dominant fashion. Matthew Sah and Jonathan Star kicked things off in doubles with a 6-2 rout of Nikola Dimitrijevic/Bryan Husin at No. 3. Bjorn Hoffmann and Mateusz Smolicki then clinched the team point with a 6-4 triumph against Tommy Edwards/Matteo Fortini at the top of the lineup.

Bruce Man-Son-Hing and Mark Peneff followed suit, outlasting Tommy Hsu/Sam Roberts, 7-6 (2), for the clean doubles sweep.

The Anteaters kept their foot on the gas in singles where they earned six straight-set victories.

In his first singles match of the season, Smolicki was first off the court, making quick work of Hsu, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 4.

Hoffmann, who was ranked 60th in the Oracle ITA Singles Rankings released earlier today, also dispatched Fortini, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 1. Jeremy Merville then secured the team victory by taking down Edwards, 7-5, 6-4, at the second position.

UCI kept rolling as Mike Mkrtchian finished off a 6-2, 7-5 win against Nils Plutat on court five, before Ali Amiri delivered a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Roberts at No. 6.

On court three, Peneff emerged with a hard-fought 7-6 (5) first-set victory, and carried the momentum into the second frame where he closed out the match with a 6-1 win.

UC Irvine will hit the road this weekend for its Big West opener at Cal Poly on Saturday, March 27.
