Zhao Tied for Second After Two Rounds in Carlsbad

CARLSBAD, Calif. -
Freshman Darien Zhao led the UC Irvine men's golf team Monday at the UC San Diego Invitational as he is tied for second after two rounds at the par-72, 7,151-yard La Costa Champions Course.
 
Zhao had his best 36-hole score of the season at even-par 144 (72-71), and sits one stroke behind the individual leader, Liam Koeneke of San Diego State. Zhao was consistent throughout the day with a team-leading five birdies against five bogeys. His 1-under 71 in the second round matched his collegiate best.
 
Junior Nathan Irwin is tied for 13th with a two-round total of 150. After shooting an opening-round 77, Irwin moved up three spots with a 1-over 73. Graduate student Jonathan Kang is also tied for 27th (156), while freshman Henry Fitzhugh is tied for 32nd (158).
 
Competing as an individual, freshman Kolbe Irei is tied for 16th with a score of 153 (76-77).
 
As a team, the Anteaters carded a 605 (310-295), and will enter the final round in fourth place. They look to move up the leaderboard tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m.
