Balanced Scoring Attack Lifts UCI Over CSUB, 70-53

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine got points from all 13 players who saw minutes tonight in a 70-53 Big West win over CSU Bakersfield, Friday afternoon at the Bren Events Center.

UCI remains on top of the Big West standings with a 6-1 record and improves to 10-5 overall. The Anteaters also remain undefeated at home (8-0). CSUB falls to 11-7 on the season and 7-4 in conference play.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Collin Welp finished with a game-high 16 points and grabbed a career-high four blocks. He also added five rebounds and two steals
> Dawson Baker also finished in double-digits with 11 points
> Brad Greene grabbed a game-high eight rebounds and added eight points
> Dean Keeler finished with a career-high two blocks
> UCI held CSUB to 39.3 percent (22-56) shooting from the floor while finishing 43.4 percent (23-53) shooting overall
> The 'Eaters went 19-28 from the free throw line
> UCI out-rebounded the visitors, 38-32, and held advantages in paint points (30-22), bench points (36-25) and second chance points (18-2)
> Justin Elder-Davis led the 'Runners with eight points

FIRST HALF
>UCI opened the scoring with on a basket by Greene then watched the Roadrunners score the next seven to jump out to a quick 7-2 lead at 17:57
>CSUB would extend the lead to 13-6 at 12:33 before the Anteaters used a pair of free throws from Welp, a right handed hook shot by Greene and a jumper at the left elbow by Justin Hohn to force a Roadrunner timeout at 10:25 and close to 12-13 (10:34)
>A 12-2 run by the Anteaters which was aided by seven free throws put UCI in front 26-19 at 3:32
>11 different Anteaters player would score at least two points as UCI would carry a nine point lead in to the half, 36-27
>Ofure Ujadughele provided a spark, adding two points, two rebounds and two assists in four minutes of actionĀ 

SECOND HALF
>Welp would battle against two defenders get fouled but still muscled up a basket off the glass. He made the free throw give UCI the 42-29 advantage at 17:24
>Welp and Isaiah Lee knocked down three-pointers on either side of a trey by CSUB's Grelon Easter, 48-32 with 13:00 minutes remaining
>Ā CSUB used a 5-0 run to come within single-digits, 53-44 (8:02)
> Back-to-back layups from Baker started an 8-0 run for the 'Eaters to put the up by 17, 65-48, with 1:21 remaining
> Two made free throws from Welp gave the 'Eaters their largest lead of the game, 70-51, with less than a minute to go. CSUB scored on a last second layup as UCI walked away with the 70-53 victory
