IRVINE, Calif. - The UC Irvine men's golf team is back in action next week as it travels to Northern California for the ninth annual Sacramento State Invitational, March 1-2.
TOURNAMENT INFO
The two-day tournament will be held at the par-72, 6,514-yard course at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif. Thirty-six holes are scheduled for Monday, while the final round will be contested on Tuesday with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. The Anteaters are part of a 15-team field that also features California Baptist, Cal State Fullerton, CSUN, Dixie State, Long Beach State, LMU, Oakland, Pacific, Santa Clara, UC Davis, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, Weber State and host Sacramento State. Cal State Fullerton has claimed the team title in each of the last two seasons.
UCI will compete with the same 5-count-4 lineup for the second-straight tournament - Jonathan Kang, Matt Gunson, Nathan Irwin, Ethan Han and Henry Fitzhugh.
SAC STATE REWIND
This marks the fifth-straight year UC Irvine will be competing in the Sacramento State Invitational. In 2020, it was the team's final tournament before the remainder of the season was canceled in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 'Eaters took third overall for their best finish of the shortened 2019-20 campaign. It also matched their best finish at the Sac State Invitational as they previously came in third in 2018. Last year, Jonathan Kang tied for sixth (221) to lead the Anteaters. Ethan Han also placed among the top-30 (229).
LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine placed 12th at The Joust at Goose Creek Golf Club, Feb. 22-23. The Anteaters saw an improvement in each round, finishing with a combined score of 906 (314-301-291). Matt Gunson led UCI, tying for 28th with a 54-hole score of 223 (76-76-72). He had a team-best 10 birdies over the course of the two-day tournament. Henry Fitzhugh shot a personal tournament-best 72 in the final round, climbing 13 spots on the individual leaderboard to tie for 41st (226). Jonathan Kang also tied for 58th (231), while Ethan Han tied for 64th (232).

• The Anteaters hosted the second annual OC Collegiate Classic, Feb. 8-9, at Coto de Caza South Course.
• It marked the third year in a row they opened the spring season on one of their home courses.
• Junior Ethan Han recorded his first career top-10 finish, coming in fourth with a personal collegiate-best 216 (E).
• Han started the year with back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71 and compiled a team-leading 13 birdies.
• Graduate student Jonathan Kang is back after the NCAA granted an extra year to the 2020 spring sport seniors.
• Since the start of the shortened 2019-20 season, Kang has registered a 73.29 average through eight tournaments.
• During that stretch, he has finished at or below par in 10 of 24 rounds played with three sub-70 scores.
• Kang has seven career top-10 finishes including at each of the last two Big West Championships.
• Junior Matt Gunson is tops on the squad in 2021 with a 74.17 scoring average.
• Gunson was the conference's top freshman at the 2019 Big West Championships where he came in 10th.
• Junior Nathan Irwin played in only one tournament last year, but had a 75.86 average in 21 rounds in 2018-19.
• The 'Eaters have three true freshmen who are looking to build off stellar high school and junior careers.
• Kolbe Irei (Roosevelt HS) was a four-time Oahu Interscholastic First-Team All-Star and two-time MVP.
• Darien Zhao was also the 2019 Palomar League individual champion at Rancho Bernardo HS in San Diego.
• Henry Fitzhugh (St. Francis HS) placed among the top-10 at the 2019 L.A. City Junior Championship.
• All three made their collegiate debuts at the Orange County Collegiate Classic.
• Over the summer, Ethan Han and Jonathan Kang competed in the 109th California Amateur Championship.
