‘Eaters Win 84-59 Decision Against CSU Dominguez Hills in Exhibition

IRVINE, Calif. – UC Irvine shot 50.9 percent from the floor in an 84-59 exhibition game win over Cal State Dominguez Hills at the Bren Events Center Friday. 

The Anteaters were 27-53 from the field, including six three-pointers. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS >Guard DJ Davis led UCI with 15 points, knocking down 3-4 from three-point range. He also added four assists and two steals >Guard JC Butler totaled 12 points, hitting 5-6 from the free throw line >Forward Collin Welp, who was named to the Lou Henson Player of the Year Watch List, had 11 points and four rebounds in 16 minutes of action >Sophomore Dawson Baker added 10 points, while forward Austin Johnson had a team-high six rebounds >Guard Justin Hohn led all players with six assists >The Toros were paced by Chris Seeley with 14 points followed by Andre Ball with 12  

FIRST HALF >Cal State Dominquez Hills started off quickly going 4-4 from the floor and taking a 10-3 lead at 17:32 >The Toros would make their first seven shots, but UCI would chip away and take a 20-19 lead on an Emmanuel Tshimanga hook shot at 12:39 >UCI would score 10 unanswered on a driving layup by Devin Tillis plus a free throw, a basket by Ofure Ujadughele, a jumper by Welp and a three-pointer by Davis, to take a 30-21 advantage at 8:07 >A five-point spurt by CSUDH closed the gap to 38-34, before UCI responded with a jumper by Baker and five straight free throws, four by Davis and one by Butler, 45-34 (1:45) >Isaiah Lee would knock down a three pointer with 45 second on the clock then CSUDH's DJ Guest would make a free throw to close out the half with UCI leading 48-37 >The Anteaters would shoot 61.5 percent (16-26) from the field in the first half, while the Toros would shot 50 percent from the floor (13-26) 

SECOND HALF >The Toros started the half with a basket then UCI out-scored CSUH, 7-2 to move out to a 55-41 lead on a pair of Butler free throws (15:28) >Davis would feed Johnson for a dunk at 9:02 to put the Anteaters up 65-50 >Back-to-back three-pointers by Davis (6:04) were followed by a jumper by Baker (4:32) and a pair of free throws by Hohn (4:03) to increase the gap to 75-54 >Hunter Ruck had a layup with 16 seconds remaining to end the scoring, 84-59 NOTES >Thirteen different players scored at least two points and grabbed at least one rebound for the Anteaters

>It was great to be back and see fans back in the Bren and it is definitely a different feeling to play in front of people again. Overall, I am generally pleased with our response to the challenge that Dominguez Hills presented us and credit to them and their offensive performance in the first five minutes of the game.

UP NEXT UCI opens the regular season on the road at New Mexico State Tuesday (Nov. 9) at 6:00 p.m. The Anteaters host Boise State in the home opener on Nov. 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Bren Events Center.
