
UC Irvine Suffers 3-0 Loss At Hawaii

HONOLULU, Hawaii – UC Irvine could not get the offense ignited in a 3-0 loss to Hawaii (18-25, 15-25, 21-25) at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center, which saw fans in the stands for the first time this season.
Hawaii (17-6, 14-1) had six aces and out-blocked UCI 7.0-4.0. The Rainbow Wahine out-hit the Anteaters .340-.167.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Middle blocker Onye Ofoegbu led UCI (15-11, 8-8) with 12 kills, hitting .417 (12-2-24). She also had two blocks and an ace
>Freshman Marianna Bertolone followed with eight kills and six digs
>Hawaii native Bailey Darnell made the start and had a team-high eight digs
>UH was led by Amber Igiede's career-high 17 kills. She hit .630 without committing an error in 27 attempts
>Brooke Van Sickle had a match-best 17 digs and eight kills in the win
FIRST SET
>Hawaii would lead 6-4 before Onye Ofoegbu had a block assist and an ace to tie the score at 6 all
>A pair of kills and an ace put Hawaii ahead 13-11 but UCI quickly fought back on two Rainbow Wahine errors, 13-13
>The Rainbow Wahine would once again lead by two (17-15) before Ellen Veargason had two block assists and a kill to take a 18-17 lead
>Hawaii responded scoring the final eight points to win the set 25-18. Five of the final points were on UCI mistakes
>UCI hit .071 and watched Hawaii fire four aces
SECOND SET
>UCI led 3-2 before Hawaii went on a 6-2 run, which included another ace to take a 9-5 lead
>Another run, this one 6-1, opened a 17-8 advantage for the Rainbow Wahine
>Hawaii would hit .344, while the Anteaters hit just .056 as UH won the set, 25-15
THIRD SET
>A kill by Ofoegbu, an ace by Indy DeSmet and two Hawaii errors helped UCI out to an early 5-2 lead
>A pair of Ofoegbu kills plus another Rainbow Wahine attack error gave UCI the 8-4 advantage
>UH would tie the set at 9-9
>Hawaii would take its first lead of the set at 12-11 on back-to-back kills
>A kill and block gave UH some separation, 17-15
>A kill by Marianna Bertolone and a Hawaii attack error knotted the set at 19-19
>Tied at 20-20, Hawaii would score with the next two on kills to take a 22-20 lead and force a UCI timeout
>Following a UCI kill by Bertolone, Amber Igiede recorded the final three kills to give Hawaii the 25-21
