UC Irvine Finishes Fourth at Big West Championships

Results

DAVIS, Calif. -
The UC Irvine women's cross country team combined for a fourth-place finish at the Big West Championships Friday morning at Wildhorse Golf Club.

It was the Anteaters' best conference showing since 2008, when they claimed runner-up honors.

"While the women had their highest team finish in over a decade, we were hoping for a bit more today," said UCI distance coach Casey Kear. "It's still a good step in the right direction but the group is definitely not satisfied. We are hoping to return to Northern California with a better outcome at the NCAA Regionals in two weeks and fight for a top-15 spot."

Junior Hannah Chau led the 'Eaters with her second career All-Big West performance. She completed the 6,000-meter championship course in 20:48.3 to take seventh. Chau has been the team's No. 1 runner in each of the four meets she has competed in this season.

Anna Vogtmann had an impressive outing in her conference debut, coming in 14th overall, and fifth among the Big West freshmen, at 21:10.6.

Three other 'Eaters added a top-30 showing. Sophomore McKenna Paulson was 25th with a time of 21:50.8, while freshman Sameen Andar came in 27th at 22:00.4. Freshman Olivia Liuson wasn't far behind in 29th (22:05.0).

Rounding out UCI's top-seven finishers were junior Patricia Sanchez (22:33.4) and freshman Amber Rios (22:40.6).

Host UC Davis won the team title, while Cal State Fullerton and Cal Poly were second and third, respectively. The Titans' Trinity Ruelas was the individual champion.

UC Irvine will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 12, when it heads to Sacramento for the NCAA West Regional.
