IRVINE, Calif. - UC Irvine women's cross country will be in action this weekend, making their way to the UC Riverside Agricultural Operations Course for the Highlander Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 16.
The Anteaters have 25 student-athletes entered in the women's 6,000-meter race that is scheduled for an 8:40 a.m. start.
QUICK HITS
• After being idle for the last three weeks, UC Irvine is set to compete in its third meet, and second 6K, of the season.
• The Anteaters' last race was the UC Riverside Invitational, which was also run on the UCR Ag/Ops Course.
• In two races this season, Hannah Chau established UCI's 4K record (14:11.0) and second-fastest 6K (20:21.5)

LAST TIME OUT
UC Irvine posted a top-five finish at the UC Riverside 6K Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 18. The Anteaters were fourth out of 22 teams, and led all Big West schools, coming in ahead of host UC Riverside, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and Hawai'i. Junior Hannah Chau led the way with a runner-up showing in a field of 170 athletes with a personal-record 20:21.5. That mark moved her up to No. 2 in program history. Freshman Anna Vogtmann also notched UCI's ninth-best 6K time at 21:01.4 to place 19th overall. Freshman Sameen Andar had a strong outing as well, clocking in at 21:27.2 (34th), while junior Patricia Sanchez (21:52.3) and freshman Makena Castillo (21:53.3) also scored. All nine 'Eaters who ran the 6K established personal bests.
BIG WEST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Junior Hannah Chau was named the Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week on Sept. 21. She was recognized for her runner-up performance at the UC Riverside Invitational. Two weeks after establishing a 4000-meter school record, the Fairfield, California, native ran the second-fastest 6K in program history at 20:21.5. She improved her personal best by 23 seconds to move up to No. 2 on the all-time list. It was Chau's second-straight top-three showing in 2021, and her sixth career top-10 performance. She became the first 'Eater to earn Big West Women's Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors since Kaycee Holcomb in 2014.
ENTERING THE MIX
Freshmen Anna Vogtmann, Sameen Andar and Makena Castillo have been among the Anteaters' top-five finishers in each of their first two collegiate meets. Vogtmann has a pair of top-20 performances, coming in eighth at the Anteater Opener and 19th at the UC Riverside Invitational. She already ranks fourth in school history in the 4K (14:30.0) and ninth in the 6K (21:01.4). Andar (8th) and Castillo (10th) also etched their names on UCI's 4K all-time charts.

The Anteaters will head to Fullerton for the Titan Invite next Friday, Oct. 22. It will be their final tune-up before the Big West Championships.
