Collin Welp was named to the Lou Henson Award mid-season watch list by CollegeInsider.com this week.
The Lou Henson Award is presented annually to the top mid-major Division I player in college basketball. The award is named after the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 season, and became just one of 11 coaches to take two teams to the final four.
Welp was included among 40 players in the mid-season list. He leads UCI and ranks 10
th in the Big West in scoring at 12.6 points per game. The junior also ranks second on the team and fifth in the conference in rebounding (6.6rpg). So far this season, the forward has amassed 79 rebounds, 20 assists, 14 steals and four blocked shots.
Welp has scored in double-figures in 11 of 12 games this season, including a season-high 18 points in 18 minutes against Cal Poly. He pulled down a career-high 19 rebounds against Loyola Marymount (Dec. 17). He was named the Big West Player of the Week (Dec. 21-28) after leading the Anteaters to a sweep of UCSB in their conference opening series.
Last season, Welp was named the Big West Sixth Man of the Year and also earned All-Big West First Team accolades.
UCI is 8-4 on the season and remains perfect in conference play with a 4-0 record. The Anteaters are riding a six-game winning streak and play Hawai'i tonight (Jan. 29) and Saturday (Jan. 30) in Big West action. Tip-off is set for 9 p.m. PT both days.
