UC Irvine women's cross country recorded their best team time of the season and came in fifth at the Big West Championships in Riverside on Nov. 2.

The Anteaters matched their conference finish from 2018, which was their highest placing since 2008. They were only 29 points behind fourth-place UC Santa Barbara.

Individually, Hannah Chau led the 'Eaters, covering the 6000-meter UCR Ag/Ops Course in 20:51.9 to take fifth overall and earn All-Big West honors. Patricia Sanchez was UCI's No. 2 runner, notching a personal-record 21:52.9. Mariah Theologidy (21:58.3) and Claire Livengood (22:18.4) also established lifetime bests. Brenda Dorantes and Anastasia Karnaze rounded out UC Irvine's scorers.

"The UC Riverside cross country course is a place most of our athletes are pretty familiar with as we race there regularly and it serves as host to the conference championship every other year," said UCI distance coach Casey Kear. "This was our third time racing there during the 2019 season and most of the conference had been at those meets as well. Hannah Chau led our group with an all-conference performance. Our second, third, and fourth finishers (Patricia Sanchez, Mariah Theologidy, and Claire Livengood) all ran personal best 6k times as well. We couldn't control how fast some of the other teams ran, but when it came down to it, only two teams on the women's side had their fastest times of the year that day: UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton, who won the meet. Our team had our best collective race when it mattered most. Even though we came up a little short in cracking the top four, we had our best all-around performance of the year, our lowest team score since 2008, and cut the deficit from 4th to 5th from 65 points in 2018 to 29 in 2019. This will be a team vying for the top three and ultimately conference championships in the future!"
