Junior starting pitcher Trenton Denholm was coming off a Big West Pitcher of the Year honor and four Big West Pitcher of the Week accolades as a sophomore without missing a beat in his first 2020 home start against a Rice opponent he faced a year ago.

In the Sunday performance in 2019 at Rice, Denholm was masterful no-hitting the Owls over five innings en route to a third-straight runaway victory.

Denholm began with three more perfect innings adding a pair of strikeouts before issuing his first walk to start the fourth inning. He returned to his groove striking out three of the next six hitters, and took his no-hitter through seven innings adding just a hit by pitch. He was ultimately lifted with an 8-0 lead allowing two baserunners and finishing his two career starts vs. Rice with 12 hitless innings striking out six.

The bullpen held on to the no-hitter for a few more batters, and ended up serving up a 10-1 victory to start the homestand. Denholm was masterful in each home game this season, and has won each of his last six home starts with an ERA of 0.39 after leading the nation in WHIP in 2019.
