UCI Takes Down Hawai’i in Honolulu, 70-63

HONOLULU, Hawai'i. – Eyassu Worku's game-high 21 points helped lead UC Irvine to a 70-63 win over Hawai'i at Stan Sheriff Center, Saturday night.

UCI (17-10) improves to 9-2 in Big West action and remains on top of the conference standings with a three game cushion. UH falls to 14-10 overall and 5-5 in the Big West.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Along with Worku, Evan Leonard and Collin Welp finished in double-digits with 18 and 15 points, respectively
> Brad Greene led the 'Eaters with eight rebounds and two blocks. As a team, UCI controlled the boards, 38-28
> UCI out-scored UH 22-4 in fast break points and held a 5-1 advantage in blocks
> The Anteaters shot 48.2 percent (27-56) from the field overall and 40 percent (4-10) from long range
> UH was 33 percent (5-15) from behind the arc and 43.4 percent (26-60) shooting overall
> The 'Bows were led by Drew Buggs with 17 points

First Half
> The teams exchanged back-and-forth points to open the half as the game remained tied, 6-6, with 15:02 remaining
> UCI used a 7-0 run that was capped with a dunk by Leonard to go up by eight, 17-9, at 10:44
> UH answered with an 8-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 3:35 left to play
> Worku hit a jumper to start a 6-2 run for the 'Eaters down the stretch to give UCI a 27-26 lead heading into the locker rooms
> Worku had a game-high nine points in the half

Second Half
> The 'Eaters came out of the break on a 9-0 run to take a double-digit lead, 36-26 (17:38)
> UH went on an 8-2 run to bring the game within one, 46-45, with 9:46 remaining
> UCI answered with a 17-4 run, capped by a layup from Worku, to take its largest lead of the game, 63-50, at 3:26
> Back-to-back three's from Hawai'i started a 10-0 run for the hosts as the 'Bows came within three, 66-63, with 36 seconds to play
> Leonard and Worku each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the 70-63 win
