UC Irvine Closes Out Home Tournament With Loss To Cal

IRVINE, Calif. -- UC Irvine closed the UCI/adidas Invitational with a 3-0 loss to California (25-17, 25-12, 25-15) at the Bren Events Center Saturday.

The Anteaters were their own worst enemy as they had 11 receiving errors and hit just .128 (27-16-86) to Cal's .446 (40-7-74). The Golden Bears held a slight 5-4 advantage in blocks.

Cal improves to 6-0, while UCI goes to 1-5.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
>Abby Marjama led the Anteaters in kills for the fourth time this season with seven kills
>Senior Makayla Wolfe and freshmen Joy Umeh and Onye Ofoegbu each added four kills. It was a career-high for Umeh
>Setter Kelly Negron had 21 set assists and a team-high seven digs
>>Cal's Mima Mirkovic led all players with 11 kills to go with eight digs

TURNING POINTS
FIRST SET

>Cal started with a 4-1 lead with the help of three UCI errors
>A long rally which ended in a Cal attack error knotted the score at 5-5
>A pair of aces by Maddie Haynes aided Cal as they regained control 12-8
>A 5-0 run which included two Golden Bear aces and two blocks pushed the gap to 20-12
>Another Cal ace would end the set 25-17

SECOND SET
>The second set was all Cal as the Golden Bears won 25-12
> A 5-1 start and a 5-0 spurt that extended the lead to 22-9 put Cal in control
>Cal out-hit UCI .619 (13-0-21) to .133 (10-6-30)

THIRD SET
>The teams remained close until Cal scored four unanswered to start a 7-1 run, taking a 14-8 advantage
>A kill and block assist by Makayla Wolfe got the Anteaters to 18-15, but Cal would close out the match with the final seven points, 25-15

UP NEXT
> UCI will be on the road for the next seven matches, starting with the Amy Svoboda Classic hosted by Air Force. The Anteaters will face Virginia Tech next Friday at 9:00 a.m. then the host Falcons at 6:00 p.m.
