'Eaters Draw at UCLA, 1-1

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer finished in a dead heat with UCLA Thursday night tying, 1-1, in Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

Making Moves
Both sides were on the attack early firing up shots and grabbing saves. The Bruins (3-4-1) broke through for the first goal from the likeliest of sources. Milan Iloski slotted home his eighth goal of the season after a failed Anteater clearance giving UCLA the 1-0 edge in the 26th minute.

The 'Eaters (2-4-3) countered right back just three minutes later. Eder Oliva put a ball through to Alvaro Quezada who dipped and dove around UCLA defenders cutting into the box and finding space near post beating keeper Justin Garces to tie it up, 1-1, in the 29th minute.

Taking It To 'Em
Neither side found the back of the net in regulation, but UC Irvine had control of the match heading into overtime with an 11-5 shot advantage. Eder Oliva came up with the best chance receiving the ball on the left wing on an odd-man rush, His shot was turned away by Garces as were long-range attempts by Jose Ortiz and Victor Falck as the match flowed into extra time

Late Chances
The programs were on the offense during the 20 minutes of overtime. Both came up with shots in the first 10 minutes with Christian Gutierrez getting the best opportunity. Roberto Molina drove upfield after a turnover in the offensive half. Gutierrez's shot from 25 yards out hummed by the far post which would have ended the match.

UCLA held possession in the final frame of overtime putting up all three shots including a sharp-angle strike Cody Sundquist that Ford Parker came up huge on to preserve the 1-1 draw

Final Score: UC Irvine 1, UCLA 1
The draw is the first in the history between these two programs as they met for the 20th time tonight. UCI is now 1-9-1 all-time at UCLA as they played their first regular season match in the Bruins' new Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

UCI finished with a 13-9 shot differential as both sides fired five on goal with Parker and Garces saving four each.

Alvaro Quezada claimed the Anteater goal now the ninth different Anteater to score the team's nine goals in 2019. Oliva provided the assist, his second of the season, matching Ricardo Ibarra for the team high. He also led all players with four shots in the match

Anteater junior captain and center back Luca Mastrantonio made an appearance in the match starting the second half and playing the final 65 minutes of the game. It was his first time on the pitch since leaving UCI's match at Utah Valley early with an injury ending his absence that lasted just more than two matches

Home Cooking
The next contest will be a spicy one as UC Irvine comes home to host Pacific Sunday night, September 29, for a 7:00 p.m. start. Pacific's new coach, Adam Reeves, was an assistant under head coach Yossi Raz. They've also added Brian Lanoye as an assistant who was a volunteer assistant under Raz at both Cal Poly Pomona and UC Irvine. To top it all, the 'Eaters are looking to avenge a 2018 loss at Pacific by a 4-2 count
