IRVINE, Calif. --- UC Irvine men's soccer tangled with a worthy adversary Friday night in Anteater Stadium evenly-pitted until an overtime flick from the San Diego Toreros dropped UCI, 1-0.
Early Toreros
The first half was a show of ball control dominance by San Diego (6-1-0) who kept the ball in the offensive half who held possession 63 percent of the half pacing play early. UC Irvine (2-4-1) didn't get any offensive chances for the first quarter of the half with a pair of offside calls thwarting others. Miguel Barry had USD's best chance in the 28th minute that glanced wide. Ultimately, the first half ended knotted up, 0-0, despite the 'Eaters accruing a 6-4 shot advantage.
Momentum ShiftÂ
The second half saw much more of an offensive press out of the Anteaters. USD started the offense in the half with a corner kick that skidded past everyone and through the box in the 52nd minute. The 'Eaters followed up a minute later with a flurry of action. There was a great chance on a low cross into the box that just needed an extra touch to find its way into the goal.
Â
Two Torero yellow cards led to good scoring opportunities off of set pieces, but both were missed by the near post. The Anteaters had countless chances in the run of play to strike first from laser shots by
Michael Orozco and
Alvaro Quezada along with multiple runs into the box, but Torero keeper Matt Wiher and the USD defense found a way to keep UCI from converting sending the match into overtime scoreless

USD DeliversÂ
As the game headed into overtime, the action flew back and forth. USD put a shot up that
Ford Parker parried and fell right at the feet of Torero defender Benji Sorman who crossed the ball into the box for midfielder Jimmy Ryan who sent a back heel flick through traffic and in for the game-winner in the 98th minute.
Final Score: San Diego 1, UC Irvine 0
Each team had five shots on target on the evening with UCI taking the total shot, 17-12. Wiher's five saves stood up to four for Parker. USD also had a massive corner kick advantage at 12-3 that they never really used to their advantage. All three yellows were issued to USD as well as they committed 16 of the 23 fouls in the match.
UCI has now had three matches need extra time to be decided where they're 1-1-1 in those. The Anteaters were without the services of starting center back,
Luca Mastrantonio, and offensive weapon,
Lawrence Yamaguchi, who were not 100% for the match.
Home StandingÂ
The 'Eaters will look to start a new win streak Sunday as they host Gonzaga at 2:00 p.m., September 22. The match will follow a UC Irvine women's soccer match as they host UCF with a kickoff of 11:30 a.m. A ticket will gain access to both matches for fans.
