Evezard Sets School Record in Win Over Cal Baptist

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Junior Jason Evezard scored a school-record nine goals in No. T-9 UC Irvine's 16-11 win over California Baptist Saturday morning at the Burns Aquatics Center.

Evezard topped the previous school record of eight goals set by Mitch Wise in 2013 and Lovre Milos in 2014.

With the win, UCI moves to 3-2 on the season while the Lancers fall to 1-4. Today's victory also marked the 200th of head coach Marc Hunt's career.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
> Evezard's nine goals also mark a career-high for the South African native
> Jon Polos tallied a hat trick with three goals
> Ivan Mercep finished with two goals, both coming in the first half
> Grant Chiponis and Casey Lynton each had a goal for the 'Eaters
> Harrison Land made a career-high 16 saves in goal
> UCI went 5-7 on powerplays while CBU finished 3-7. The Anteaters were 0-1 in five-meter penalty shots

TURNING POINTS
Quarter One

> Mercep scored twice in the first quarter as both teams exchanged goals to knot the game, 2-2, after the first eight minutes

Quarter Two
> The back-and-forth affair continued as neither team would gain more than a one goal lead the game remained tied at the half, 7-7
> Polos scored at 6:23 followed by back-to-back goals from Evezard
> Chiponis added a goal at 1:57 and Polos scored as time expired on the clock to make it 7-7

Quarter Three
> CBU scored twice to open the third quarter taking a 9-7 lead (6:40)
> Evezard fired in two-consecutive goals to make it 9-9 at 4:45
> The Lancers would score again before Polos goal knotted the game, 10-10, at 2:59
> Evezard finished the frame with two goals to give UCI a 12-10 lead

Quarter Four
> The Anteaters limited the Lancers to only one goal in the final frame while scoring four times to seal the 16-11 victory
> Evezard continued his stellar day adding three goals in the quarter

HEAD COACH MARC HUNT ON TODAY'S WIN
"We stayed resilient and had a much better defensive second half. Evezard took shots that he was given. He definitely had a high output, the team really worked to create good shots. To be a good team, we need to be much better defensively. Harrison was solid in the cage but overall we need to emphasize better defense."
