FIRST SERVE
UCI will travel to the United States Air Force Academy to participate in the Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic Friday and Saturday (Sept. 13-14) at the Cadet East Gym.
The Anteaters will take on Virginia Tech Friday at 9:00 a.m. PT followed later that evening with a meeting against the host Falcons at 6:00 p.m. PT. UCI will close out the tournament on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. PT against Loyola.
STORYLINES
Virginia Tech, who is 3-4 overall, is coming off a 3-1 loss to VCU on Tuesday. The Hokies went 2-1 at the Liberty Invitational last weekend, beating Elon and Davidson before losing to Liberty.
UCI and Air Force have met once before in 2002 with the Falcons winning 3-0 at home.
The Falcons enter the weekend with a 2-4 record. AFA went 2-1 at the ORU Invitational, beating Little Rock and Oral Roberts and falling in five sets to Illinois State.
Loyola-Chicago is also 3-4 overall, beating Loyola Maryland and Montana State and dropping a contest to Western Michigan last weekend.
Amy Svoboda, a 1989 Academy graduate and four-year letterwinner on the Air Force volleyball team, was killed during an A-10 training accident in 1997. Svoboda, who earned MVP honors during her senior season with the Falcons, was one of the first 14 female fighter pilots in the Air Force – and one of the first six to fly the A-10.

ABOUT THE ANTEATERS
UCI is 1-5 on the year.
The Anteaters picked up its first win against UNLV (3-1) at the UCI/adidas Invitational before losing to North Carolina (3-1) and California (3-0).
Outside hitter Abby Marjama led UCI in all three matches last weekend, posting 14 kills in the win over the Rebels then pounding a career-high 18 kills versus North Carolina.
Marjama fired a season-high six aces against UNLV and leads the team with 10. She is ranked fourth among Big West players with a 0.50 average.
Setter Kelly Negron was named Big West Freshman of the Week after recording a career-high 43 set assists versus the Tar Heels. She had her second double-double of the season with 32 set assists and a career-high 17 digs against the Rebels.
This weekend is the first of seven straight matches on the road for the Anteaters.
