SACRAMENTO -
UC Irvine junior Jack Pickard finished 39th in the javelin on the second day of the NCAA West Preliminaries Friday afternoon at Hornet Stadium.

Pickard started the competition with a toss of 188-11. That would hold as his best mark of the day with his next two attempts measuring 179-05 and 182-11.

Pickard, a junior college transfer, had an impressive debut season with the Anteaters. In his first Division I competition, the Concord, Calif., native earned an individual victory with a personal-best 221-00 at the Big West Challenge on April 5. That broke a school record in the new javelin (since 1986) and ranks sixth all-time in program history.

Pickard went on to secure All-Big West honors with a third-place finish at the conference championships. He is the first 'Eater to qualify for the NCAA West Prelims in the men's javelin since the inception of the meet in 2003.

Senior Asa Allen did not start in his 110m hurdle race.

UC Irvine wraps up the three-day regional meet on Saturday, May 25, with redshirt freshman Kyle Tsu in the shot put at 2:45 p.m.
