IRVINE, Calif. --- No. 19 Anteaters let up a season high 16 hits to Cal State Fullerton en route to a 10-4 loss Tuesday night in Anteater Ballpark.
Third-Inning Turmoil
Tuesday night starters
Dylan Riddle and Dillon Brown each held the other scoreless through two innings. The Titans (18-22, 5-7) struck first in the top of the third getting a run on a grounder by Isaiah Garcia to take the lead. Jake Pavletich followed with a single to right field and was thrown out at second base trying to stretch it for the inning's final out, but not before Daniel Cope crossed home for a 2-0 CSF lead in the third.
The Anteaters (28-11, 10-5) put up a response in the bottom half started by
Mike Peabody who singled and took third on an
Adrian Damla single.
Konnor Zickefoose hit a ball in the hole that Zach Lew stopped, but his throw to second was wide allowing everyone to be safe and scoring Peabody to make it 2-1. CSF brought in Gavin Velasquez to help strand the remaining runners and preserve the slim Fullerton lead.
The 5th Inning
The score remained until the fifth when the Titans made their move.
Ryan Johnston walked a batter and allowed a hit with nobody out before giving way to
Jordan Bocko. The Titans got a third run from an RBI single, but then struck out for the inning's second out. AJ Curtis worked a walk leading to Kameron Guangorena slicing a two-run single and opening the lead up to 5-1. Jason Brandow delivered the big blow belting a three-run home run out to left center for a six-run frame and an 8-1 CSF lead.
UC Irvine responded once again with a loud inning. Zickefoose erupted for a triple with one out, and then with two outs
Griffin Mazur missed a home run by inches with a foul ball, and had to settle for a base on a HBP setting the table for Jason Castro. His third hit of the night crashed off the right field wall bringing home both runners and inching UCI closer now trailing 8-3 through five innings.
Final Score: Cal State Fullerton 10, No. 19 UC Irvine 4
The Titans connected for 16 hits against the 'Eaters, five more than any other UCI opponent has put up with multiple hits in six innings. AJ Curtis led the charge going 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. Damla, Zickefoose, and Castro had three hits each for the Anteaters with Zickefoose and Castro each registering a pair of extra-base hits and RBIs.
Brandon Lewis went 2-for-5 with a run and his 15th double to extend his on-base streak to 36 straight games.
Pitchers of Record
Riddle let in just one run in 2.1 innings striking out two, but taking the loss for the first time in his career.
Michael Frias was effective allowing an unearned run in two innings striking out three to no walks.
Darius Garcia pitching 1.1 hitless innings striking out a hitter with the bases loaded as he entered in relief. CSF got Dillon Brown his third dwin matching Riddle with one run over 2.1 innings

UCI travels for its second straight series on the road heading out into non-conference territory to the University of Iowa of the Big Ten. The squads start up the series Friday, May 3, with a 4:05 p.m. PT start with 12:05 p.m. PT set for Saturday and 11:05 p.m. PT finishing the weekend Sunday.
